When are we getting 512MB?

If/when is the 6800 getting half a gig of memory? I was reading something about Doom 3 recommending 512MB of memory for it's ultra quality setting and I have yet to see a card featuring that.

You can play D3 on Ultra with a 256mb GT, you just need a powerful system. Having raptors helps too.

sometime q4 this year last i heard.

With the delays of this generation of cards and the cost of GDDR3 I would expect that to be more like Q1 2005.

Even with raptors in my system Doom 3 will always pause loading textures on ultra quality.

Who cares about ultra quality the difference is barely even noticeable when staring at screenshots and it's practicly impossible to tell during the game.

You got 36 or 74s? Because I don't really get any slowdown, maybe once every blue moon.

It looks great now playing High Q/1600x1200! I can't imagine playing Ultra Q at this setting with all those GODDAM IMPS THROWING SH!T AT ME THE WHOLE DAMN GAME!!.......

What a bitch it was to get this XTPE. Imagine what's going to happen when the 512MB cards come out.

EBAY: The bidding will start at $1500............

People, Raptors or not, if you got the latest and greatest videocard, but your hard drives are being called on for texture loads, then you need to upgrade your system RAM, plain and simple. Memory accesses go in a specific order; CPU cache/video memory, system memory, then hard drive as a worst-case scenario. Fastest access time to slowest, thank God/Allah/Buddha/Ra/Zeus/whatever. System memory is literally a thousand times faster than any hard drive in terms of access time--how about you address the memory shortage first, and then look at hard drive selection?

This isn't directed at anyone in particular, just trying to help y'all out.

I have 1GB now but from the Doom3 reviews there's no performance increase if I go to 2GB.

And they would be correct. I'd venture to guess that your videocard's power is not being used to its fullest potential, if you're seeing problems. The rewritten ATi OpenGL drivers should fix that.
