I have a 3.2E and i was wondering how high people can OC a prescott...someone on another forum said that 478 prescotts are not easily overclocked to 4.0 ghz...

It seems none of the 478 chips can hit 4g easily. You need water cooling or some other form of extreme cooling to get there. But with a WC setup you should be able to get close.

check out my voltages in your other thread.

3.0E 775 @ 4.7 Ghz (Phasechange)

Can't wait to get my hands on one of the new E0 Stepping ESs...

Well there you go. You can expect up to 4.7g. Only thing is you have to keep it at about -50f.

cooling really does help those prescotts a lot - i topped out at 3.7 on air.

I'll have my water cooling up and running very soon, as I just got the heatercore today.....

It'll only be running on my 2.8C at first, but I'm getting a 3.2E with the wicked SL7KC stepping before the year's end....so I'm quite excited. With the stepping I'm getting people have never had any issues hitting about 3.6 or 3.7GHz on air with little voltage increase.....so I'm going for 3.7-4 on water.....possibly 4.2GHz for that nice 1GHz overclock if I'm a little lucky.

I've gotten my 3.0 E up to 3.4 with just a one high CFM fan and a Zalman blossom. Runs very well. I've tried going higher but my RAM sucks. My temps are decent; 52 C at max load and around 35 C idle.

3.2E@3.8/1.4v with Alpha PAL8942 and 36cfm fan. Pretty sure it'd hit 4GHz with water.

How are the 775 processors? I have a chance to get a 550 (3.4 GHz) What are people generally getting with those on air?

According to this article, they're not getting much on air.. they're too hot!

[H] article

I don't think you can compare a 130 nm extreme edition on the 1066 FSB to a 90 nm 800 FSB prescott. What do you think?

I agree completely.

And CANiSLAYu, looks like you might have the same stepping as what I'm getting for my 3.2E, or at least very similar....because those are the kind of excellent results that people are seeing out of certain steppings of the 3.2E.....and you should have NO trouble with 4GHz on water. What are your temps at your current OC on air BTW?

what stepping is that? i have D0...

The stepping is D0.....but if you look at the last 5 characters of your product code on the box what does it say? Two nicest 3.2E steppings are SL7KC and SL7B8.....the SL7B8 being a C0 revision though....and the C0's seem to be a bit newer, and are having some very nice success. I have the option of either or when I get mine, so I'll see how things start to pan out, but right now the C0 SL7B8 is lookin' like the chip to own.

Any idea on how a QK34ES would do?

Where in the world are you getting those numbers and letters from? They don't correspond to anything you'd have on a barcode on the CPU box at all. Try again bro.....either that or clarify what you meant plz.

It didn't come with a box, it's an engineering sample, it says Psctt 3.2 written with marker on it, and QK34ES was where the stepping usually is. I googled it and came up with one site that had one at 304fsb on dry ice. I also had someone on another forum tell me his wouldn't oc for crap. I played with it a little on my p4p800 but I don't have sufficient cooling, my sp-94 will be here tomorrow or friday hopefully. I was hoping maybe some of the guys here might have come across one or know if it's any good.

It also appears to say either E0 or C-0 in marker.

I found thishttp://www.muropaketti.com/sampsa/prescott/spi1m_4644.gif here http://www16.big.or.jp/~bunnywk/cgi-bin/superpi.cgi I hope I get as lucky as that guy :p i'll be happy with 3.7 on air.

ok, i have SL7E5...how is that batch? is there a site you can tell?

Not bad, it's more or less just talking to enough people and hearing how the different revisions do. The SL7B8 (C0) and SL7KC (D0) are the two nicest available right now...but that's not to say that you can't end up with an SL7E5 that's still gonna overclock like nuts, just that your chances are higher with a couple of the other chips.

I have a LGA775 3.4E Prescott running at 3.92ghz right now with the stock Intel cooler and AS5 thermal paste. It runs at 100% load (2 instances of Folding@Home). Temp is about 55C under that load. Mobo is the Abit AA8 Duramax. Voltage is at 1.41.

I just got the AA8 put in a few hours ago so I am still playing with settings. It would be cool to see 4ghz on stock air. I had an ECS 915P before and that was terrible.

My system is sigged - had to bump Vcore a little to get Prime to run successfully, but it's completely stable at these settings. About 45C idle, 55-6C under heavy load.

Regards - B.B.S.

Ahh.. now that is nice... 4 GHz on air. My 3.0 c won't even boot at 4 GHz unless the chip's below freezing.

cornelious0_0, have you heard if the newer prescotts need a 915 or 925 mobo to overclock well? I'm getting a retail edge 3.4 and I'm wondering if I can just get an 865 board like the AS8 with a 775 socket so I can keep my XT-PE and gig of RAM.

Well, supposedly ABITs read high, but what I'm getting from MBM is ~45C idle and ~60C load. I just went to 4 sticks of RAM though and it's giving me crap at 238MHz 1:1, so I'm at 225 1:1 right now  Hopefully find a way around this because I really want this 2GB of RAM.

woah! is that 533 or 550mhz memory you're toting?
mo Theoretical FSB of 275, that's insane! =D
With proper cooling you could run 1:1 up to 4.4Ghz very cool.. um err hot

It's 533MHz, but with all 4 DIMMs filled I can't get to as high as it was with only 2 DIMMs. Oh well, I need the RAM. There's also PC4400 available and PC5400 as well (though I believe the 5400 is DDR2 only).

Right off the bat with my new heatsink, not sure if the voltage is right on there, i'm pretty sure it was 1.4**. I'm gonna go on a cs:source binge really quick then i'll see where I can get her from there.

Damn you and your ES.....grr.....

I'm getting my 3.2E by the end of the month, and at 250fsb I'll be at 4.25GHz or so.....I know that my mobo and ram will do 265-275, so being able to bump it down and scale the FSB would be nice....but oh well. :p

you mean like this?

32es37.JPG

little boost on the volts, from the bios its set to 1.43. I need w/c to go higher.
Now I see the addiction!

Yeah, those C0's are really nice overclockers.....3.7GHz on air is about what I've come to expect out of 'em....and mine isn't even touching no HSF....going straight on my h2O. ;)

yea i can get 3.7 on air out of my D0

There's a couple nice C0 stepping for overclocking and one really nice D0 for sure....so either way you're in pretty good shape if you had to choose between the C or D. ;)

I am at 4.15GHz on my P4 550 on air. I had to replace the stock intel heat sink because it was loud and didn't cool worth a crap. I was running 50c idle and up to 70c under load with the stock intel heat sink. I went and bought the Tt Silent tower and !bam! idle is now 36-40c and under load is maxing out at 50c at 4.15GHz. 750Mhz overclock on air isn't too shabby IMO.

Cool, except your sig is a bit long.....4 lines over the limit. Forum rules state 10 lines max and you're up to 14, get editting. ;)

Welcome to the forums though, I guess maybe you just hadn't read the rules yet...

While waiting for PCI-E to reach the AMD desktop, I figured it was time to play with the P4 system a little more. This afternoon, I managed to pick up a Prescott 3.2E C0 SL7B8 from one of the local mom & pop stores for a decent price.

For air cooling (SLK-900 & 92mm Tornado), I'm having one hell of a time trying to get this system to boot at anything higher than 3200. @ Stock, 1.3875V and it Prime 95's no problemo.

But, try cranking the FSB to 215 (3400 MHz) @ 1.3875 and it won't boot into Windows. @ 1.4125 it will boot to Windows, but crash moments later.

What's the safest VCore you can push through a Prescott on air cooling (I've O/C'd NorthWoods before, but these Prescott's are a new venture for me)?

Could it be the motherboard undervolting the CPU? (IC7-MAX3).

PSU is an OCZ PowerStream 520W and all 3 rails show green lights across the board.

Memory is 2x256 MB Corsair XMS3700, known running good up to 250 MHz 3-4-4-7.

//Edit: Call me a n00b. When I installed the new CPU, the BIOS reset my memory to SPD. It doesn't like running 220 MHz @ 2.5-3-3-7! After a little tinkering.... 3.5 GHz and climbing on air (Tornado is on a fan controller & at lowest setting)... 54*C load.
