okay so i have an old pcie x600se or something.. story goes like this........

i was pulling the stock heatsink off one day and knocked some kind of capacitor off as seen here:http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/153/1000214yt8xg6.jpg huge pic warning!

and then i figure id apply new grease on the chip and reattach the heatsink... then it would look like this: http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/7025/p1010150gb7.jpg (keep in mind it still looks like that in bios and post, but in windows it gets fairly better...

i was cleaning my room up a little and i found it under my bed, bare on the carpet! then i was thinking i wanna see if it still works.. so i decided to put a better cooler on it for shits and giggles, it turned out the mounting was off for the heatsink, so i just zip tied it on there, i though it wouldnt work.. but thus again i turn on the computer monitor turns on and i get all those dots like that bios pic i took, then i figured id let it boot into windows and just see what it looked like then.. well it turned out everything was like clear, very clear but not perfect (as when compared to what the bios looked like)..

then i install the necessary drivers for it.... then i download ati tool just to see again for shits and giggles if i can overclock it...

i thought all this mess on the screen was artifacts, but i think its something else, and im wrong...

so ati tool says stock clocks are 400/275.. so i open the 3d thingamabob (that fuzzy cube thing) and there are no artifacts at all...

i go to oc the memory.. the optimal memory speed thing runs for about 6 minutes before it starts to artifact.. thats when the memory hits 445 (890 mhz effective)... i then drop it to 440 just thinking it would be stable there... then i start the automated core overclocker, and that thing runs for over 10 minutes, and ati tool still doesnt show any errors, by then im just like screw this i dont feel like waiting, then i see that the core was at 550 mhz all the way from 400 so i was a little surprised of course, knowing i had a zip tied cooler on it and whatnot...

well i go to then run 3dmartk 05 and i get a score of: http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/8201/x6003dmark05st1.jpg

now if thats good or not i have no clue as i never ran 3d mark 05 while the card was at stock speeds..

now heres the whole question im getting to... what the hell is this crap all over the screen? it cant be artifacting as ati tool never reported any issues... can all this crap have to do with that capacitor thing that broke off?

It's called artifacting. Your card is hosed. Get a new one.

how can it be artifacting in windows but not in ati tool, if it is artifacting already in windows wouldnt it get an error right away in ati tool's test thing?
 
Capacitors and inductors are the filters and image sharpeners for the video card. You have first hand example of that now. You have three choices.
1. Leave the card as it is.
2. Purchase a new card.
3. Repair the damage with some patience and a soldering iron.

Many posters have repaired popped capacitors with varying levels of success. Do a little research and get that iron warmed up.

Some capacitors, such as canister (through-hole) electrolytic or solid-state capacitors, can be replaced without too much difficulty. That part, however, is a surface-mounted part. They can still technically be replaced and repaired, but it is exponentially more difficult, unless you have an SMT soldering system. Even if you had the SMT soldering equipment, you still don't know what value of capacitor you need.

But seriously...It's just an X600. Get a new one. If this was some prized X1950XTX or something I could understand the tendency to want to repair it. But its just an X600.

Yep, I agree.. it's not worth the headache to try and repair... and if you are at all like me, you'd probably just wind up making things worse... my soldering skillz suck big time...

yea its not that important to me, at all, (not like i need it, i just found it and figured id tinker with it), its just that i was wondering about the crap all over the screen, ill prolly just throw it away, i think Bbq wants it tho, so ill just give it to him.. and yes when i solder i do always make it worse.

im still on it, nothing has gone wrong, just been too lazy to put my 7800gtx back in,..

anyways thanks for the replies :)

lmfao. You know what this reminds me of? My fucked up X800GTO2. Artifacted on my motherboard splash screen. Four nice vertical bars, and when you brought the cursor over one of the bars, it reflected over the other three. It's artifacting... doesn't matter what ATI tool says, software usually doesn't tell you shit when you get these kinds of problems.
