So i got a barton 2600+ (locked) abit kv6, 1 gig of generic pc3200 cas 3 , radeon 9700 pro, enermax 300 watts psu and one 7200rpm 60 gigs.
This system works really well with default settings and ram at 333 instead of 400. dram speed is forced to 166 and the timings are set to spd (whatever that means). Even if its rated CAS 3, the timings are presently 2.5 -3 -3 -7.
I tried to overclock it to 2.3 ghz using a 400 mhz fsb (for this i set the ram to ddr 400). i tried with default voltage and it didnt boot. i tried with 1.675 and i could get in the bios but it wouldnt boot into windows, same with 1.7v.(when the ram timings were set to spd, i would get the verifing dmi data pool or whatever line with the lil slash flashing at the end. I left the computer run like this for 20 minitutes and nothing happened )

I tried numerous ram speed and nothing worked, sometime the ram test wouldnt work or id get a weird artifact right after the mem test. The comp doesnt even boot if i set the timings to manual and set the cas to 3 instead of 2.5 (maybe because the other values are higher than those used by spds)

I really dunno what the problem is and since i cant lock the agp + pci bus independatly ( have to use a ratio) i cant use a fsb between 166 or 200. And now for some shadowy reasons i have some kind of gray tray on the right edge of all the windows of progras on the desktop that goes in straight line to the right side.(those tray or shadows doesnt appear in games)
I know it probably sound confusing. :/ if you need to know anything else to help me just let me know.
 
seems like ur running your ram too fast for stock voltage yes?

Loosen the timings and up the Voltage on the ram, see if that helps.
 
update ! Tried to up the fsb to 200, 6:2:1 ratio, ram at spd for frequency and timings.
result : right at the beginning it stop at the memory speed line.
tried same thing again but with ram set to 166. Same result
im giving a try to ram voltage. ill try to increase it 1 or 2 notch. BTW shouldnt the timings be ok if i let the bios choose em? (smd or spd i think)

Not necessarily. Definately try your own timings. You say its "generic" ram, so, anything could happen. Knock the timings down real bad (3-4-4) and from there try better timings.
 
k thx, imma test it up now.
edit : tried increasing the ram voltage 1 notch, + cpu voltage at 1.7. it kept crashing/freezing randomly but took a bit more time somtime.
i tried the ram timings with those manual settings : 3-5-5-8, didnt work either :/
i think ill flash for another bios with abit flashing utility and see what it gives.
flashed bios and found out that increasing or decreasing the fsb by 1 ends up in a non post.
