What's wrong with my 6300?

I have a e6300 on a DS3 motherboard with a Big Typhoon heatsink.

I tried overclocking to 2.4 and 2.8 ghz, and both times my temperatures were around 50-55 degrees celsius. I managed to play a game for about an hour with no problems, but the next morning it would lock up after like 30 seconds. I set the voltage in the BIOS to like 1.387 or something to that effect. But what's the deal? I should be able to overclock to these speeds easily. Maybe there's something wrong with my Big Typhoon? I really have no idea.

Try adjusting your RAM timings. Also, for a mere 2.4ghz overclock, you don't even need that much voltage. I have my E6300 @ 2.4ghz also and am only using 1.18 Vcore. My timings are 5-5-5-15 with DDR 667 OC'ed
 
For 2.8ghz you shouldn't need more than 1.35v in the BIOS...

Make sure your FSB is at least 401mhz... it takes alot of stress off the motherboard.

Is there another FSB point where it takes stress off the motherboard? I cant seem to make 465FSB stable. Would 500FSB be one of those points?

Why do particular FSB speeds reduce stress? Can someone elaborate on this please.

Edit: I'm running my 6300 at 3.22Ghz stable with 1.325v. 1.38v seems very high for your overclock considering the results reported in the Conroe overclock thread.

Holy crap! 3.22GHz w/ only 1.325Vcore :p That is great. What Board are you using, and stepping/week is your chip?
 
There's nothing wrong with your E6300. It is advertised as clocked at 1.86GHz, and it runs at exactly 1.86GHz, rock-solid. No problems here.

Same thing for me. These new Allendale / Conroe chips are amazing, especially at default voltage. This overclock was also on a DS3 board with some cheap Micron DDR2-667 memory set to CL4-4-4-12. It didn't come with any extras like a heat spreader but still performs rock solid stable. The memory just needed a boost from 1.8 v to 2.1v.

A lot of memory seems to be hitting the wall between 920 and 950 on the DS3 board. Whether it's rated at DDR2-667 or DDR2-800 doesn't seem to matter.

I completely agree with your post but this thread should be more accurate if it said plx help me with my E6300 overclocking.

It's a week 25 chip, stepping 6 on a DS3. Also, I'm using a Scythe Infinity cooler, but I think the fan may need to be upgraded for better cooling. Also, I have an 80mm fan aimed toward the Northbridge since it was too hot to touch without it.

that is a GREAT oc :eek: . I've been running my 6300 @ 3.22GHz using 1.392Volts, using a scythe infinity with a 90CFM 120mm x 25mm sunon fan. As soon as I get my RMA'ed 7900GTO back from Evga, I'll try lowering the Vcore. Thanks man

What kind of temps are you getting with Core Temp? Also, did you notice a big difference in temps with the higher CFM fan as compared to the stock fan on the infinity (that is if you even bothered with the stock fan)?

And sorry for hijacking this thread.
 
Nearsite, is that 1.18 voltage reported on CPUZ or the one you set on BIOS ?

Thurlow, Thats too much voltage for 2.4 and 2.8, Some can even run stock voltage at that speed. Less voltage less heat I supposed. Mine ran 3.3gig at 1.35625 Vcore set in BIOS.
Whats the memory divider you set at ?
