this is what my screen looks like when i first turn on my computer the next day. In order to get it to work I have to restart my computer about 7-8 times. I think it's the graphics card that is messed up but im not sure..... I even formatted the harddrive that contains windows and it still does it. Anyone know what the problem is? thanks in advance.
 
Update the Vid Card Drivers? Swap the card out and try a known good one??
 
Looks fine to me :p

Try booting in safe mode, see if it looks normal, and uninstall/reinstall the video card from there. If it's still bad, it's probably a bad video card.
 
Does it look like that while its booting up as well? You know on the black screen with white writing, or is it once you hit the XP loader screen?
 
it's weird because once i get it working, it works the whole day and I can reboot and everything, but the next day it looks like that again!

lol.

remove and clean cardfan , then reload drivers.
mine only gets that way when i clock the piss out of it .
but then i attribute that to the vga bios flash i did 2 yrs ago

what are your other system specifications, motherboard etc

i had that happen with my 9700 pro in an Asus A7N8X Deluxe board, well the issue was not exactly like yours, it happen once in a while, with squares on the boot image and windows image
i never actually notice what was the solution, the issue only happens with the 9700 pro and it rarely happens and is only with that particular board, a 9800 pro didnt have issues,

yes, i have both 9700 pro and Asus A7N8X deluxe :(

But this never happened before, I had this system for over a year too..
 
what kinda CRT is it? what brand??

i had similar problems and it wasnt my video card... it was the monitor connector problem so, i try to replace the connector but i f*cked it up...

if you can borrow monitor from somebody, try to connect their monitor your comp and see whether their monitor works...

Did you upgrade to the latest bios from asus Site?
also try to put a new Cmos battery, and push the bios chip just to make sure is secure
as for me i never understood the problem, and my issues didnt look as bad as yours, like said they happen rarely, the board still works
the issues happen in just a period, after that they disappear, and they happen mostly when i went into the bios and exit it

^^ you could be right, but i had the same problem like he has right now
same motherboard and video card, i had the same symptons, i tested the video card in another machine and it worked fine, it was probably an issue between the motheboard and video card, i never found what the problem was.

it could be the motherboard also
who knows, he needs to test the parts to make sure
 
i had that problem. i used really cheap system RAM, and it crapped out on me while running linux. i tried turning it on, got a boot error with a mem problem code. i switched the sticks slots, and got it to boot, but looking like that garbled crap. so i just pulled the stick out altogether, and left the other stick in, and it was fine.
 
that happened to my friend who thought he was so 1337. so he overclocked his 9800 pro until it died. :p

yay for teh suxor.

but it's probably a vid card problem, swap in one that you know is good. if you dont have one, you can always have my gf2 mx200. :)
 
That's what mr monitor looked like when i dropped my harddrive while my computers was on :eek:
 
Hrmmmm, if i RMA my vid card, would they send me another 9700 pro? I thought they werent making those anymore....it'd be sweet if they just gave me a 9800 pro :p
 
I've seen that before. But I can't tell you the reason, because I believe there could be several. For me, I originally thought it was my video card overheating, so I switched out the video card and sometimes it would do it and so times it would not. Turns out, after switching the memory and processor, it was the capcitors on the monitor board. I noticed that they were leaking, kinda a clear fluid slime coming out and corrosion associated and they are all puffed up. I was like wtf. I order some from digikey, took off the old ones, and replaced them and bingo it works! I am saying this because you say that you've had it for a year and never overclocked and never had problems. Also, it sucks cause you can't RMA after a year, actually mine was like two years. So unfortunately, it comes down to just switching out the parts until you find what's wrong. The display that you see is just the symptom that something inside your computer isn't working.
 
you are right, it is 3 years.

edit:for the manufacturer, but usually only 1 year for the retailer.
 
looks like your computer has had a few too many, like me. haha'
