What's the story with Blu-Ray drives?

I know Sony came out with a very expensive one which could not play movies. Are there any other companies which have announced production of Blu-Ray drives? Any predictions about near-term pricing? I would be interested in buying one, but only if it can play movies and at full resolution. Any competing lower priced chipsets on the horizon?

It need not have burning capability, though all that of come out so far seem to. With the current price of Blu-Ray blanks I really don't see them being practical in the near term.

I do understand though that the lack of ability to play movies is a software problem, not a hardware problem. So I suppose that would not be insurmountable as there are alternate channels for getting software (eg. Order the restore CD for the laptop model which comes with Blu-Ray Win-DVD pre-installed. You can get them from sony for a reasonable price).
