What's the point of the Chrome notifications system tray icon?

Its existence suggests that I'm able to receive notifications via Chrome even when the browser is not open, but this is not the case. So what is the purpose of it?

too bad firefox has sucked for years

is the new totally new rebuilt from ground up firefox out yet?

Unlike Gmail Notifier or Google Talk I don't think Chrome notifications work unless Chrome is opened. I know it's useful for me when I have several tabs opened and with extensions such as one that monitors when an item on a web site changes status, is back in stock, changes price, etc.

"Some websites, apps, and extensions, such as Google Calendar, can show notifications on your computer desktop."

One of the greatest hidden features of Chrome is the built-in save as PDF. Great if you're trying to go paperless and without burdening your system with pricey bloat like Acrobat Pro.
