What's the main software to test each device's performance?

There are many softwares currently to test performance.
But what's the main software to test?

For example, HDD, ODD, USB, 1394, SATA, LAN, AUDIO
What utility could I use to get these performance?

Is there any specific software targed on the device?

For example, I know that "HD tune" is applied for testing HDD...
What about other device's software?

Sandra, Everest Home Edition, PCWizard2008, PCMark05, PCMark Vantage (Vista only), etc... there's a ton of stuff. Those are the "suites" that test devices either in separate individual tests or as a batch and then report results.
