Whats the Idea behind the Dual GPU videocards lieik the 6800GTx2 on the [H]ard homepage? Can you use it on a non SLI board? why not just get 2 singal cards???

it just puts all the components on a single card that 2 cards would normally use up, this is good if you want an SSF or want to save space due to other cards in the way of ur 1x slot etc.... also they will be 10%-15% cheaper then buying 2 cards seperatly...

Heh, you are not sticking this thing in an SFF PC. Hell I don't even think it would fit in my Lian Li PC65B

Also, I'm not sure where you got that information on price. The Gigabyte 3D1 costs about as much as buying two 6600GTs separately, and I have seen no pricing information on these upcoming dual 6800 cards. Link?

ok I can see the price benefit (if there is any)... and maybe being able to save some space for more perifs in the other pci slots, but that thing is a serious chunker!! can you say "faaaat guy in a little coat"?? lol

Has there been any confirmation or denial of the ability to run two Dual-GPU cards on the same motherboard in some sort of ridiculous 4x SLI mode? On top of that, what about running two Dual-GPU cards in non-sli, to have SLI on two monitors? (Or something to that effect, not sure of the feasibility of that.)

Considering the card in that picture has no "fingers" (nor does the 3d1 I believe), it certainly wouldn't be possible in the "traditional" sense. Not to mention that the dual gpu cards now are using SLi, just as two cards do, they are just doing it on one physical PCIe slot.

Denial. Too lazy to search for my previous links, but I went into several detailed explanations as to why not, short of using a dual-chipset solution or a chipset with too many PCIe lanes to count (a la Tyan's S2895 or nForce4 Pro chipset combinations).

too much is never enough dammit!! there just has to be a way!

very truly yours,
politenessman

supposedly they are going to enable more than 2 gpus in sli in a future driver revision...

I was aware the card was running SLI on one board as opposed to two "linked" ones, and that it doesn't have a bridge connector on the top. However, anything's possible, and I was more leaning toward "Official" confirmation or denial of what shall henceforth be known as Q-SLI. That's right folks, you heard it here first. Q-SLI, get it while it doesn't exist but is still hot. :p

Traces on the motherboard are prohibitive. The x16 slot on the mobo is divided into two x8 connectors, and the fingers on the graphics card also divide it into two x8's. The only way multiple-SLI would work is if the graphics card split it into x4 connectors instead.

huh?

if two of the chips are connected on each board...then you still only need an x8 connection for each card...you don't need more traces on the motherboard for each core...just each card...

Personally, I think this whole SLI thing and the dual GPU design are going to be realitive short lived!
It seems to me that the dual core GPU's are going to be pretty much the standard in the next couple or three years or so, if for no other reason than production costs! :) A dual core GPU card will be cheaper to manufacture than a dual GPU one and should perform every bit as well as a SLI system with a lot less driver and setup hassels.

That is just fugly.

The 3D1+motherboard actually works out to a little cheaper or the same. The Nforce4 SLI board it comes with retails for 200 (though can be found for 180 or so. 500-180=320. A 6600GT retails for 200. The cheapest 6600GT Retail i could find in 5 seconds is 160 after rebate. So you essentially end up at the same price. In the end what does it come down to? Personal preference :). I dont think one was overly faster then the other. I think it would be a kinda neat bragging right personally to have a 3D1 over SLI.

ugly? lol and i got my SLI board brand new for $147

wow, I thought it was big, but not bigger than the motherboard!!!...we shouldn't call the motherboard, the motherboard anymore hehe..more like the grannyboard hehe

I was just reading up on this........looking at the Gigabyte combo(GV3D-1 dual 6600gt card and GA-K8NXP-SLI mainboard ). You cant run two dual-gpu cards together, just the one in SLI mode. I was surprised at the performance results....it runs at a 6800gt level and better..........most notably better in high resolutions, or 4xAA / 8xAF enabled. I dont think it will take off though...too bad.

Also: Want to bet how many people will want the 3D-1 after only a limited production rolls out, they stop making them, and NO-ONE can get their hands on them anymore?

actually a 6800gt>3d-1 @ high resolutiond with AA/AF :) just like the way a 6800gt>SLI 6600gt's

Actually there is some info coming out of nvidia that you will eventually be able to run these dual GPU cards in SLI with another dual GPU card. Maybe not with existing motherboards, but here is some info on the subject:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20050309164235.html

There is also a more current article that actually has some comments from nvidia, such as they had been planning this all along..I will find it and post a link.

EDIT: Found one of the articles...

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=22151

There is another one out there with some stuff from nvidia, still cant find that one though, still looking.

Here is a clip from nvidia's FAQ page for SLI, down at the very bottom is an interesting question with an interesting answer

Can you use more than two graphics cards with SLI?
NVIDIA currently supports only dual GPU scaling at this time.

Key phrase is "at this time"

Can you see it?!? Two dual-gpu 6800Ultras in SLI? On your Dual-core cpu system?
I'm going to need two dual-paycheck jobs to pay for it all! :D

maybe im missing something [it's totally possible!]

but isnt the price a bit low on this? [$239]

and i though the 3d1 was only available with the gb mb as a combo...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125196

also if they are selling that solo would it work with the [GIGABYTE GA-K8NU-SLI]

which newegg has for $135

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128279

i only ask cause ... well that's a nice 6600gt sli setup for... less than $400?

plus right here on hardocp the testers tried the 3d1 with an asus sli board and it
worked just fine

http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzEy

now on newegg it does show it as being a 6600, it doesn't specify gt - so im not sure
if the product listing is wrong or gb has two models of the 3d1 [both a 6600 and a
6600gt]

???
