What the difference between LCD tv and LCD monitors, im thinking about getting a new display for my HTPC and i just want to know what the differences are.
 
LCD monitors have higher resolutions at smaller sizes and normally have a 16:10 aspect ratio.

LCD TVs have a 16:9 aspect ratio and normally have better contrast, a built-in tuner, and come with a remote control.
 
A lot of the time, the scaling in a monitor is set up for computer usage while a tv is set up for video. Also, monitors can have better color reproduction or faster response times.
 
Ok, this is the difference that will matter to you on your purchase.

LCD Monitors need an external box to use to change channel, as it does not have a built in TV Tuner.

LCD TV's on the other hand have built in tuners, with no need for an external box.


See my monitor, the Westinghouse LVM37-W3SE is a 37" Monitor that runs 1920x1080 resolution. I just can't plug cable from the wall into it, I need a set top box for that.
 
LCD monitors obviously do not go as large in size as an LCD/TV. LCD monitors biggest that I know of is 30", 28", 27", 26" 24" etc. But, as gtg465x mentioned earlier, they can scale a higher resolution especially on the 30" LCD monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. The LCD/TV most of them that are at 720P and have a native resolution of 1366 x 768 enough to display High Definition movies. Most of these TVs with 720P are tvs that are 32" in size or smaller. But, some 32" TV are supporting 1080P resolution. A 1080P LCD/TV has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 resolution which is suitable for PS3 and Blue Ray movies. These can be found mainly on TVs with a minimum size of 37" or larger. But, as mentioned earlier, 32" size also supporting 1080P res. LCD/TV also has more video inputs than an LCD monitor with 2-3 HDMI inputs, component, S-video and composite connection. On LCD monitors, you have less video inputs with mainly a DVI-D and VGA port. There are some LCDS with HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component and S-Video inputs also like the Gateway 24" FHD2400 lcd. If I was you, and plan on getting an LCD/TV. I would get a 1080P tv since Blue Ray will be the HD standard. Plus, you get to enjoy your PS3 or Xbox 360 and fully output games that support 1080P resolution.
 
Pixel pitch. Text looks pretty crappy on most TVs.

Unless you mean a TV monitor, which is just a TV with no tuner.
 
I am also wondering about the difference, since I am trying to decide between a 27" monitor or a 1080p 32" TV. How much is the contrast difference and color difference between the two? What would the pixel pitch on a 1080p 32" TV be?

I found this link http://www.behardware.com/articles/661-1/the-new-30-inch-monitors-dell-and-samsung.html on another thread for comparing the font size, but it looks like their 32" comparison is only for a 768p TV.

I tried the pitch calculator http://www.thirdculture.com/joel/shumi/computer/hardware/ppicalc.html and it seems the pixel pitch for a 1080p 32" TV is 0.369, compare to 0.303 for 27" monitor. I am having a hard time imagining the difference though.
