Whats the Difference between GPU Artifacts and Memory Artifacts

Im getting artifacts in my games from my video card and
i dont know the difference so i can figure out what is running
to hot.

in far cry when i run down a hallway my gun and the enimies
"sparkle" with grey pixels and other interesting stuff goes on.

i think i already toasted my video card becuase if you look back i was that "jerk" that asked about RMA'ing to ATI..

im not going to RMA ill just wait till D3 or HL2 comes out for an XT.. anways.. how i can tell whats causing the artifacts?

i get dots and sparkles from core overclock on my 9800pro.
 
Then my next question would be.. anyone know a running temp that the card should be ok at?

i need to hook a probe up to it to see what temp im getting i guess
