What's the diff?

So what exactly is the difference between Celeron and pentium 4's? Is it just less cache for less cash? If the answer is dead obvious, I'm a newbe.

The big diff between them is the slower bus speeds and smaller cache. It goes a little farther into it then that like differences in architecture and intruction sets and different chipsets and such but thats basically it. Just a budget CPU that does good for everyday computing.

Ah Ah, I found a loop hole here.....newer Celerons are not only Socket 478, but also running off bus speeds that are actually supported by todays high end i875 boards. I don't know WHY you'd ever prefer or WANT a celeron though.....even something as "big" as a 2.7GHz get's beat down by AMD's Applebread 1.6GHz Duron.....that's just freakin' sad IMO.

Sure there are motherboard differences and chipset differences between AMD and Intel.....but in THIS case I'd actually recommend the Duron, as strange as that may sound.

Oh, I'm sorry, have I gone off topic a bit??? I didn't really mean anything by any of that, I'm sure you're perfectly happy with your sub-duron processor.....I'm just saying that I personally would not be. just 'cus I like to DO things with my computer. ;)

But again, as it is in many cases it doesnt matter how something compares to something in just straight performance...its also the price and availability and the all famed "feel test"

Yes thats right feel test...even though one processor can out perform another, the lesser one may "feel" better when going about your daily work. Just like the old 550 celeron I had here. Everything felt smoother on it then on my K6-2 550 yet the celeron scored less then it.

Ok, now I'm WAY off topic.....

This "feel test" of yours also applies quite well if one is to compare today's Pentium 4 processors to the newcomer A64. While the A64's are currently the top performers in games and MOST synthetic benchmarks......there's just something about the P4 that makes it a joy "compute on". Whether or not someone agrees that HT actually DOES something is irrelevant.....it IS there, and it IS working.....there are just certain instances that allow it to shine through, the way it was meant to.

If AMD had something available that could rival the effectiveness of HT then sure, I'd gladly make the switch.....but that's just not the way things are. I will admit, AMD's are still the cheapest way to go if someone wants a nice gaming system, but not everyone is going to fill that niche.

Give Intel credit where it's due they still do what they do very well.....they've just started to appeal to a different audience lately, that's all. It's not Intel's fault that AMD has "the hottest, newest technology" on the market.....and there's nothing they can do about it.

All Intel can do is sit back and ride on the coat-tails of their previous success's and reputation.....something that they actually do quite well.

Oh I'm sorry, did I stray just a bit from the path???? Again??? Wow, maybe It's time for me to get a new hobby, thread hijacking just isn't what it used to be. ;)

My sediments exactly. Thats what I tell myself everday to justify spending $700 on my mobo and cpu 6 months ago...

NP, That's what I'm here for.

Believe it or not, I actually do more then just hijack threads around here. ;)
