I've been researching a new build for 3 months and decided on a Core 2 duo 6700. However, money is just not where it needs to be for me to complete my build. So in an effort to reduce initial costs and still upgrade my current build, what is the cheapest LGA775 cpu I can get retail? I want to buy a 680i chipset mobo and if I can get a cheap cpu to fit in it until the kick ass cpu's come down in price, then that would be great.

FYI, my current build has a PIII 1GHz cpu, so that should give you an indication how old it is. And no, my current mobo cannot accept anything faster.

Just get either the E6300, e4300, E6600. Those are imo the best choices atm.

e6300 and e4300 are in the same price range at under $180

e6400 under $220

Take your pick.

Cheapest dual core is the Pentium D 805, for about $75. The cheapest Core 2 Duo however is the E6300 as stated above, by your request it sounded like you meant cheapest period, and in that case that Celeron D is.

BTW an e6600 Core 2 Duo is a better choice than the e6700 if you plan on overclocking, as they both reach about the same overclocks with ease.

Would any of these work in my dell dimension 9100?, I need an upgrade for the pentuim 4 630

It's hard to say. According to Dell, your computer's motherboard uses the 945P chipset. The newer 945P motherboards support Core2Duo, but not the old ones. You will have to find out somehow if yours will be compatible.

I'm using a Pentium D 805 right now, but I'll upgrade to Core 2 Duo when price drops lower.
