what's the bottleneck in this system?

on my second pc i have a= intel celeron d @2.53, 1gig of corsair pc3200, and a ati 9600xt.where is the bottleneck?

Hmmm...you're pretty well balanced, but an easy way to tell if you are CPU limited would be to overclock that Celeron a little. If you get noticeably better performance then you have your answer. If you don't, you have your answer.

You didn't mention your type and speed of hard drive either.

Probably the Celery, but your system is pretty "ballanced" really. IIRC the Celery D doesn't suck that hard compared to old Celerys, so that's like maybe a P4 2.0/9600 XT combo. I've got a friend with a P4 1.5 and a 9600 Pro, and they are pretty CPU-bottlenecked, so I'd guess you really aren't that unballanced either way.

Overclock the Celeron and buy a 6600 GT. You'll be happy with the performance increase if you play modern games.

It's not really unbalanced, but obviously it's not a high performance machine. So I wouldn't expect huge performance. I wouldn't expect stellar performance. You can get yourself some very decent performance with OC'ing your CPU and video card.

A P4 3.2E with the same video card is only scoring 2,000 points more than you are. So you really don't have a serious bottleneck either way. With a faster CPU, the 9600 XT would be the main limiting factor. With a faster video card, you might gain more performance, but the CPU would become the limiting factor. With a 9800 Pro, overclocking from 2.4 to 3.2 produced BIG improvement gains on a friend's system (like 39,000 to 46,000 on AQ3), and your Celeron D is closer to a P4 2.0 IIRC.

i've been thinking of upgrading the cpu to a p4 3.0 when i get back from mexico. :cool:thanks

Another good suggestion. My 9600XT overclocks like a dream. I was running it at 576 core and over 700 DDR until I upgraded. Now it's in one of the family machines so I'm running it @stock.

Something to bear in mind, though, is that the 9600 XT + a faster CPU would probably give you a noticeably better "real world" gaming experience, since your minimum FPS in games would often be higher, even though the AQ3 score might not go up so much.
