What's the best socket 775 processor for $120?

Best bang for buck:
$100 - Intel Pentium D 820 Smithfield 2.8GHz LGA 775

Stick to that CPU or make the jump to the Core2Duo E6300:
$182 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz

Core2Duo's will only work on newer Intel P965Express and Intel 975X chipset based boards, as well as nForce500 Intel edition series boards. There are also a couple VIA chipsets that support it. Check the manufacturer's page for more info on whether or not the board supports C2D or not.

What do you need? What's your budget? What will you be using the system for?

It's for games. What's the cheapest mico ATX motherboard that will let me overclock?

for intel? none, lol. j/k... last I checked there weren't any good mATX solutions out for c2d. i think the delay on g965 express chipsets were the hold up. start a post in the sff forum. this is probably your best bet:
$103 - ASUS P5LD2-VM R2.0 (GREEN) Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945G Micro ATX

The Asus P5L-MX can OC too, I hear, just not as good as the one i listed above. Though, I'd wait for a better board to come along.

How does a 1.86GHz Core 2 compare to a Pentium?
Intel's got this top of the line Pentium Extreme Edition 965 (Presler core, 3.73GHz, 2 x 2MB L2 Cache)... it currently costs $990. They also have this low model Core2Duo named E6300 (Conroe core (or allendale?), 1.86Ghz, 2MB Shared L2 Cache)... it currently costs $182. The E6300, the lowest model Core2Duo, is on par with the performance of the most expensive, highest performing Pentium CPU. Imagine how much it outperforms the lower model Pentiums (P4HT or Pent.D) ;) Not only does it perform on par with the Extreme Edition chip, it runs cooler, consumes less power, and can overclock with ease (to ~2.6Ghz with intel stock cooling and only 1.35v); not to mention, its 80% cheaper than the pentium extreme edition.

and I'm happy. That is me with the comment on the Xms800 See sig. onboard Nic cuts out `320fsb and the sound is reported to be less than desirable-i don't have mine hooked up though-good reson to get a decent sound card!.
Just this mobo, 2X512mb Xms800, onboard video netted me a 3 on the vista ratings! All of my scores were 4.8 to 5.3 Except video. You can wait for Dx 10 and get a top of the line card.
Or get the p5b-e:
