x800 Pro -> XT @ 575 / 590. One pencil vmod already done by previous owner (had this card for 2 months or so now). Now, if I go to 580 / 590 I get artifacts (the kind that randomly jut out from textures and geometry). I'm wondering what (technically) causes this sort of thing, and how I can stop it. I plan on doing some more pencil vmods once I get my watercooling set up around Christmas time, but I mean, if this won't fix my issue and I just can't get past 575, I simply won't bother.

I'm just curious as to the technical aspects of what causes something like this and whether more voltage is going to solve it and allow me to get higher. Temps currently are 68C load.

omfg :( my memory wont go above 531 without artifacts, core does better at 561 but still nothing like what your talking about.. and mines an XT not a pro too.. :O
 
Down clock and be happy with it. You get what you pay for, don't damage your memory chips by overclocking too high.

No offense or anything, but you really didn't answer any of my proposed questions or provide any advice. It runs fine at 575 / 590, and I'm simply wondering if vmods + watercooling will let me get higher, and am also interested in the technicalities behind getting artifacts at these levels.
 
I'm no engineer, but it seems to me that obviously, at some point the stress that you're putting on the card is causing it to fail... If you're sure it's not a heat issue (it always happens at that clock and not just after a while), then higher voltage MIGHT make it work, but of course with more heat and a reduced lifespan... the more you push it, the faster the card dies..

I'm pretty sure that like clock speed and heat, voltage increase and time until your card dies is probably not a linear function... (at the same rate)
aka it's probably not worth it...
 
I'm getting an R520 / NV50 when it's out and selling this (they won't be on water, running at lower voltages etc), so that's not much of a concern. It looks like this isn't the place to be asking this question.

It's definitely not the place to ask if it doesn't bother your conscience to push the card to the bleeding edge, and then when you've wrung its guts out, sell it to some unsuspecting sucker.

An Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer might improve your chance of a good overclock, if one is available to fit your card. Water cooling might work too if you do it right. If it's a heat issue, that is. At some point though, everything reaches its limit.
 
I'm selling it to a real life friend who is well aware of what I'm doing to the card, and well aware of how it's performing for me. Of course, none of this is your business, but if you need to know those kinds of things, there you go.

It seems no one here can simply answer some questions without making rediculous judgements on certain things that have no regard to the original question. What I do to my card, where I sell it and how fast I want it to run is none of your business and not pertinent to the questions being asked.

This thread can be locked now, since clearly no one can provide answers.
 
Artifacts and such are caused by heat.

Water cooling will help this.

There is no way to tell you exactly how much it will help. You will have to determine for yourself.

Ahh, thank you. I didn't know artifacts were specifically caused by heat. Looks like I'll be putting it under the pencil, and then under the water. Wonder how much John would charge just for the vmods and no uber fans :p
