what's my next move?

MSI i848P Neo-LS
Intel P4 2.8 (800) - Family=F, Model=2, Stepping=9, Revision=D1
Patriot PC3200 512mb stick
Globe Fan cooler (alum hs, 70mm fan @ ~4000rpm)

in my bios i've got my fsb up to 234 with one bump up on the vcore @ 1.5375. - interesting, in windows it says +1 whatever i set in bios (so according to windows im running 235mhz fsb)

235 (set in bios) freezes while running 3dmark2k1

anyways, my cooling isnt too great but im around 31c idle @ 3290MHz

how does this compare to others? i've never heard of Patriot memory, but i've also never overclocked...

what comes next? multiplier? (how do i unlock it?) going for more clock speed... :)

The multiplier on intel CPU's cannot be adjusted, it's locked.

Well, since you have pc3200 ram, running it that high is overclocking the RAM quite a bit. If you haven't already, try giving more voltage to your memory, or, if that fails, running it in a divider.

ok, i'll try that

running a divider? please explain what and how :)

When running normally, the ram and the FSB run in a 1:1 ratio, meanin that if the FSB is running at 235mhZ, so is the RAM. Any good BIOS will have options to run the front side bus in a "divider" so that the RAM isn't running as fast as the front side bus, then you can overclock your farther because you're not overclocking your RAM too.

But yeah, check out those links he posted :)

read their "how to OC a CPU and maintain stability" guide, and their "how to OC a p4" guide.

thanks, will do

i tried upping the dimm voltage from 2.7 to 2.75, then moving the fsb from 234 to 235. i had the same problem though

ok that makes sense, i didn't see the options in the bios though. would it be called the "divider" in the bios? i see the DRAM frequency, is this it? i'll experiment right now

thanks

edit: i just noticed this, hmmm.. is this something that's unusual? i still have some time to return it

edit: thanks for the advice/help. now im making progress just tested SuperPI with my dram at 333, fsb 237 and my memory ar 393 running default vcore (yay!) onward...

Just to let you know once you overclock hardware you technically "can't" return it.

Just thought I would let you know

never heard of them either.

Hope you have fun oc'in

damn, well are they going to know? they usually take it back without question but i assume they would test it later (at frys). if i did return it and they found out it was overclocked would i have to pay them back?

anyways, i was thinking if i did return it i would return my motherboard also and get a dual channel memory board and 2x256 sticks of some name brand stuff (other than Patriot).

thanks for letting me know. once i get some cash it'll probably be too late, so im going to be sticking with this stuff...

I think, more or less, its up to you and your morality. Will you lie and return something you know you have voided the warentee on even though they will probably never know? Just like all those who burn up their ATI's OCin them and then return them for new ones. They (ATI) will happily RMA them, but its up to you and your concious.
