Here is my setup:

Athlon 64 2800+ 754 oc @ 2.1
ASUS K8VX (bad for overclocking !)
1 GB Kingston DDR400
MSI 6600GT 128MB AGP

I get 3600 05'3DMarks with the setup.

Most games runs fine at reasonable resolutions, but with all my favorites shooters, I get slowdowns whenever there is a lot of action going on.

So should I upgrade my CPU OR my video card FIRST to get away of this problem ?

I don't want better overall frame rates, I want better MINIMUM frame rates with action scenes.

Thanx for your help.

Definately Video card. you should put a 6800GT in that sucker and you'll se a huge improvement.

I would wait. The 6600 is fine for now, yes you cant play your fav games all maxed out. Wait until one of those dual 6800 GT card come out and slap one of those suckers in your rig.

Then we shall all bow down before your uber Video card.

Your video card sucks. 128MB RAM=bad.

Wait until fall and pickup the NV70, or pickup a 6800 Ultra for ~$300 then. No sense in upgrading now with new cards on the horizon.

upgrade the chip / mobo / ram IMO.

His video card is hindering performance much more than the CPU. 1GB of DDR400 is not slowing him down. And the mobo is negligable.

qft.

wait for prices to drop, then get the sub-flagship nVidia card. i.e., get the one model that's right under the flagship one...

IDT its the video card. I have a 6600GT and I can play all my fav FPS maxed out.

In 1024 X 768 with 8 X AF , everything is fine.

But as soon as I try to get a higher resolution, or if I crank up AA, most of my games drops below 45fps in action scenes, which I call unplayable.

Now 6800 GT doesn't feels like a BIG upgrade, and 7800 GTX won't be available in AGP.

Hard decisions...
