K im just waiting for some spare time to install my new Audigy 2 and I was curious about EAX. What does it do and how does it affect performance in games and music listening?

doesn't really affect performance in games, (surround sound sounds fun though)...

and um, eax isn't for music, since it's stereo sound.

depends on which Creative card you have...

If you have an Audigy or Audigy 2 "Value" series card, the Environmental Audio eXtensions are computed on a driver level and bog down the CPU... the non-value Audigys and Live Sound Blaster have an EMU chip that does the effects processing.

I used to have a Soundblaster Live Value and using EAX significantly dropped game performance--however with my newer Audigy 2 ZS, I notice no performance impact. There might be one if I were to run FRAPS and compare, but it's not enough for me to care that much

You can use EAX for music by going into the Creative Mixer, then into the EAX Console and turning EAX support on. This allows you to add all sorts of fancy effects such as reverbs, phasers, flangers and whatnot to any audio coming out of your speaker. Again, the performance impact depends on whether you have a value card or not.

I used to use the EAX audio environments for recording sounds and making music, until I realized that they're gimmicky and better effects processors have, well, better effects.

EAX is certainly fun to play with, in both games and music!
