i just got a coreduo laptop. upgraded over my pentium M. it feels a lil bit snappier.

but whats the diff between it and the new core duo 2?(try to explain the most you can)

AND memron?

Core 2 Duo is a dual-core desktop processor with cores known as Allendale and Conroe.

Core Duo is a laptop technology known as Yonah, which is a dual core technology that replaces the Banias/Dothan Pentium M's.

Core Solo is also Yonah core, only is a single core.

Merom will be the notebook line of the Core 2 Duo technology.

in merom (the mobile processor line) you'll get 64bit support, models have higher clocks and more L2 cache. overall performance is said to be better aswell
these cpus are based on intel's Core Microarchitecture

sockets, cache, etc

Core Duo was 479 pin socket only

Core 2 Duo is 775 and will be 479, also

The 479 pin version of Core 2 (Merom) will be a drop in replacement with Core Duo. If you have a non-soldered chip/socket.

Core 2 Duo is basically a reworked Core Duo. It got a better memory prefetch system, which makes the latency seem much lower for most tasks. And it has better gaming/FP performance.

whats the perf diff between core duo and C2D? ive seen core duo and memron results on anandtech.

Don't forget that the Core 2 Duo's run 45ms compared to Core Duo's 90ms.

Merom = Core 2 so look at those results ! DUH!

not too much difference on most things. Gaming the Core2 could do a better assuming you have a graphics card.

But since most laptops have integrated graphics you won't notice ANY difference b/c that system is handicapped and usually NOT upgradeable. :(

I think he's talking about the memory latency being less with Core 2 ( "90ms vs 45ms" ? ) Like I said before Core 2 has a better prefetch system which works REALLY well at reducing latency.

Core Duo is, as far as I've understood it, essentially an improved Pentium M with an extra core. The Pentium M is an improvement on the Pentium 3 design. Evolutionary improvements. The Core 2 Duo, on the other hand, is a whole new design. It basically takes all the best elements of the Core Duo (Yonah), improves upon it, and mixes in a few bits and pieces from the NetBurst (Pentium 4) lineage.

I'm sure something like Ars Technica has a low-down on how it works.

The Merom C2D doesn't seem to be all that much faster than the Core Duo, but I suspect this is because its bus speed is too low.

Core duo is 65nm... as is Core2 Duo. There isn't a 45nm part at the moment.
