Whats considered truely "multitasking" when choosing a processor

I keep reading AMD pwns all for gaming and Intel is the master workhorse for multitasking..

I currently own an Intel CPU but game for several hours a day usually. While I am gaming , however, I like to watch dvds, or browse several different explorer windows, play cds ect..

Are common tasks like this enough to stick with Intel for my next cpu upgrade ( possibly the P4 630 64 bit socket 775) is what I'm strongly leaning towards OC'ed to at least 3.6

Current system:

Intel 2.4
875 chipset MB
AGP 9800 pro
PC 2100 DDR ram, 4 x 512
SOundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
120mm Cooler Master mini ( Neat little H2O system)
500 W PSU

I just bought a Raptor 74 g to put in my new machine so Im definately upgrading my MB for both SATA capability and a PCI- Express slot.

I would assume the 945 chipset would be the best way to go on a new MB also? Any advice would help, I certainly dont claim to be all knowing on these subjects so any help would be appreciated.
 
the best multitasking is dual core cpu, of which AMD has the best out there right now.

if you dont notice any significant lag and stuff with your current setup then i dont see a reason to upgrade. in fact, you could even hold out til next year when intel will be releasing yonah and conroe, aka mr. ownage and mr. ownage II
 
I'm assuming you mean that you alt tab out, and you're not actually running the movie in the background or browsing explorer windows at the exact same time. A single core processor like an AMD will handle that just fine with enough RAM. Dual core/HT is useful for people who might be encoding video/audio in the background.
 
Well usually I am just alt tabbing out but I play games in windows mode and use word, excel, and browse the net in other windows. I guess iM just facing the same issue many other recent posters are lookiing for a logical solution for, the best way to move into PCI express.
For me the answer seemed to be get the Albatron socket 478 PCI -e board but I truely to not want to but a board and be stuck with a socket 478.

What do you guys do when choosing a build, I imagine everything must revolve around one choice, i.e. what socket you what to start with. /shrug

If you can spend the 600$ you need for the AMD chips, then go for it. but for Sub 300$ chips, intel has the multitasking market. Either the Pentium D or Pentium 4 are good. I own a 570J, and today i had Photoshop, homesite, subspace (game), trillian, 6 firefox windows, and my FTP server all open at the same time, with NO decreas ein performance. Thats something my AMD rig cant do.
