Are there any flat panel displays coming out in the next year or two that match the color quality of our old CRTs? LCDs are horrible for blacks, and they also suffer from stair stepping in smooth gradients.

Are there flat panel displays currently that don't have these issues? If I were to buy a 20-24" right now, what's the best flat panel display color wise?

Background information: I like editing pictures, and my LCD just doesn't cut it. It's a ViewSonic VP171B. I have a 19in. CRT also, but it is so large.

NEC LCD2490WUXi-BK and LCD2690WUXi-BK. These are the best displays in their size categories out there.

Well when nanotechnology is implemented better, you'll have awesome displays that are powered just by the lights in your room.:p

Larger LCD monitors are coming. What at first we thought 24" was big, it will be a common size. 26", 27", 28 LCD will be showing up in no time. I have a 24" and don't see it as even big but, just right.

Ok, so what you all didn't say was there is no good tech coming out that will match a CRT for color accuracy?

Not really actually, they are mainly just replacing smaller monitors with the same technlogy but, just bigger in inches. They feel that size is a big attraction for it as it is and will sell based on that already. However, they may throw in some features on the monitor to make it more of an incentive to buy. But, it all boils down to: "is the picture quality improving"?

In the next 12 - 24 months? The most likely tech jump is the move to LED backlighting. There are other tech's out there, like SED, but the use of LED backlights is closer to happening IMHO.

The LCD you have uses a crappy TN panel designed for low cost and speed. TN by nature produces horrid blacks. Banding is because the panel in that monitor is only capable of 6 bit color--the extra two bits needed to show 16.8 million colors are faked using dithering. LCD technology has already moved on from what you currently have. Indeed, any modern non-TN monitor would be a vast improvement over a VP171B. You don't need to wait for the next generation of LCD screens to get something substantially better than what you have.

Read this to get up to date on current LCD technology.

Thanks for the link Overwind. I'll check it out. Yeah, I know my LCD is old. I was just hoping that there was something substantially better.

I remember seeing a picture of a CRT, LCD, and a couple new pannels compared side by side with a black screen and in a dark room. They let the picture expose for a while. The LCD was all blown out white because of the backlight, and this new panel - I can't remember what is was - had no light showing. I don't remember how well that display tech did with color and darkness reproduction.
