500x8= 4000mhz

or

445x9- 4000mhz

I been running stable @ 475x8 to get me 3.8 ghz. Now i want to push it to 4ghz but unsure which one to do. My ram is only 800mhz so i just been unlinking the ram from the cpu which keeps my ram @ 400mhz.

Right now im at 9x445 which is 4ghz but before i was @ 475x8. Is the bus more much important than the overall cpu speed?

correct me if I'm wrong, but don't higher FSB's create more heat,thus your CPu lasts shorter?

If that's right, I would pick a higher multi.
 
I figured that a lower multi = less stress on the CPU but more stress on the chipset.
But I really have no idea. XD
 
well damn i cant run 4ghz with orthos it seems. its stable, but it raises my core temps up way to high. I had to bring it over 1.4 volts in bios which is 1.37v in windows to make it stable, but look what happen! ( i hit tjmax which throttled my cpu big time) nothing i do daily will bring my temps this high, but its getting warmer so i wont be able to hit 4ghz till i buy another heatsink. Thats after i buy my 24 inch lcd =[ which is going to take awhile damn it.

Higher FSB stresses the motherboard more so unless you see a performance benefit, its better to use a lower speed if you can. It will also generate more heat so can adversely affect other components in your case.

Higher FSB will allow higher speed Ram to run at 1:1 but I have found no performance benefit running (DR2-1000) on a higher FSB with a lower x8 CPU multi so I use x9 and lower FSB.
Its actually below its rated speed so I took the opportunity to reduce its voltage, double longevity bonus :D
 
High FSB = HEAT
High FSB = high benching scores = HEAT
High FSB-Low Multiplier vs. Low FSB-High Multiplier = no different in real world applications.

Now it's up to you what you want to use.

If you have good RAM & chipset, 500x8= 4000mhz should be an easy deal.

or if it's value ram/integrated graphics chipset, 445x9- 4000mhz will work nicely too.

Either way it's a huge boost from stock @ no cost, & as long as the temps are reasonable it's free speed :p
 
In theory, everything else being equal, higher FSB yields higher speed.
However, higher FSB put more stress on the motherboard.
IMO, the small increase in performance (if any) does not worth the additional stress that is put on the mb.
Another factor to consider is the RAM speed that also depends of FSB.
 
96C? Holy shit.

Yep, i idle @ 47c ish on a cool day. Right now its hot in my room and im idling @ 53. So with a orthos load it gets into the 70's @ 3.8ghz.

I guess the extra volts+4.0ghz really over pushes my heatsink.

I don't know how RealTemp works. Is it showing the actual temp?! Because your tjunc is showing 127C left? That's weird.
 
That cant be right. You'd have to be using some supremely failtacular cooling to get your CPU to 96c. I'd also be surprised if you could boot windows at that temperature. That looks like a bug to me. an E8400 at 4ghz wouldn't even hit that temperature on stock cooling probably.

:eek:Trust me its right. IF it was core temp it wouldve showned me @ 111c. using real temp drops it 15c. And remember once tjmax is hit the bios is set to throttle down the cpu by multiplier and voltage i believe. Both of those things happen and my heatsink is garabe anyway so i believe the temps.

Im idling at 46C right now. If i was to start up prime95 or orthos my temps would instant shoot up to 60+ and make it into the 70's.

let me explain that. Im not sure how many people hit the tjmax, but it rolls over after you hit it. Its like once it counts down and gets below 0 so it doesnt show a negative number. I know. So after it hits the max temp the software doesnt go back to 95 tjmax but it goes to 127 for some reason. WHY? But it does. And yes my heatsink is that bad. I brought the cpu oem and didnt have enough for a good heatsink so i shouldn't be pushing it to 4ghz on this cheap coolermaster pos which fan maxes @ 2200 RPM's so it doesnt have power to cool this beast.

i really dont want to remove my damn motherboard to install a cooler though :(

So i might just wait and order the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro because theres noway im removing my motherboard this install a cooler lol.
 
well i just picked up the new heatsink.. cost $32 out the door from tigerdirect.


Damn now its time to take apart my pc just for a heatsink *pulls hair out!!!*

36C idle and 54C orthos load :D

just need to do the pencil volt mod so i can over clock to 4ghz with vdrop
 
If your MOBO and Ram can tolerate a higher FSB, that will give you the best performance.

But, if your MOBO is only rated for 1333 like mine, any FSB above 333 is gravy. lickit up if you can get it, but don't expect it.

When I push my FSB to 400, with a mult of 8 on my Q6600, Prime 95 will run all day with no errors, but I get random lockups on my system.

It does little good to unlink your ram to achieve your higher FSB, as the Ram is where the FSB get's it's data from.

Unless you are just into the e-penis thing.
