whats better in overclocking?

leaving the multiplier stock and rasing the fsb? or lowering the multi and rasing the fsb more?
 
Depends on what application your running (whether it favors ram over cpu or vice versa) and more importantly how many MHz you can gain back on the cpu after you lower the multiplier.
 
id start with just raising the fsb, your cpu might be able to hit a certain speed but sometimes your mobo cant get to that high of a fsb, but also, if you compare two identical clock speeds, one having a higher fsb and lower mult and the other the opposite, the better performance will come from the one with the higher fsb.. just mess with it..im more stable at 10x250 than i am at 9x278
 
cool thanks... now only if my computer would overclock :( if i have a 3500+ i was trying to do 10x230 and it wouldnt boot.. would i need to up the voltage? or am i doing something wrong?
 
depending on what kind of board you have, you have to find out a way to drop the HTT multiplier.... on my board, the abit kv8 pro, i get a choice of 1 through 5... it should just satisfy this: FSB * HTTMULT < 1000. that could be why youre hitting a wall so early.. also, depending on what kind of ram you have, you may have to use a memory divider.. so if you have DDR400 and its not the fast overclockable kind, drop the setting down to DDR333, and tighten the timings while youre at it... you shouldnt have to raise the voltage until you see some instability in windows..at each clock speed just run Prime95 or some kind of heavy benchmark, if its unstable, add a bit of voltage, do it again, and watch your temps... thats the process in a nutshell for you... theres some better detailed info in the stickied Overclockin FAQ in this forum.
