well, i'm currently in the proccess for finding parts for my new comp, anyway,

the uses for the computer will be Gaming and music listening, im not to familiar with sound cards, just know Audigy 2 is a gaming card and M-audio is for music, but i want something that has both good....

im just not sure if one excels in one area and sucks at the next, or is there a better all around card? i just dont want to sacrifice my music just to make games sound better or vice versa.
 
well ill think about speakers later, but just a card, nothing more then 300 bucks would like to have it around 200

Sadly there is no card which masters both gaming and music reproduction. The M-Audio Revolution 7.1 is the best compromise. The CPU usage in games is a bit higher but the music fidelity is also very good.

If you want the truly best quality in both gaming and music reproduction then you need two cards: The Audigy 2 ZS for gaming & An EMU 0404 based card for music. There's no way around it.

A possible third road would be getting the HDA Mystique or Nvidia soundstorm and using the Digital output to take advantage of your reciever's DAC. I'd wait for a review of the HDA Mystique before going that route though.
 
We need to know what speakers you will be using to recommend suitable card(s). You plan on using 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1?
 
if you want to game mostly, you should get a soundbastard or something like that because games work with them easilly. probably better to get something like this for "5.1" type things where impressivness and amount of speakers is more important than sound reproduction.

if you want great sound quality but are willing to do without the EAX and stuff then its hard to do better then an EMU 1212 which you can get on sale for 200 bux. i will get one for next machine, but jkeep my audigy for games.
 
The Audigy 2 ZS is in my opinion the most well rounded. M-Audio's Revolution series is a good alternative if you lean more towards movies and music than games, and the Audigy of course has the strongest game support of any card out there, so it's up to you and your needs.

The E-Mu 0404 is a better deal than the 1212M, in my opinion. Still, this solution is only suitable for those who need no more than two channels of analog output.
