What's a safe video card temp?

I have a 5900XT that I'm considering overclocking since its temps are much lower than what is posted here...it runs at 42C idle and 59C load. I know, for example, that most people try to keep their CPU temps under 50C. Is there a similar threshold for video cards or is it different for each one? Thanks!

GPUs on the whole run a lot hotter than a CPU. Your temps seem fine - there should be a recommended max temp thats on temp display part of the CP. My 6800GT runs between 58C and 85C with a max recommended of 120C! Most GPUs will also slow down if too high a temp is reached.

Right, but it's given that you should always try to stay well below that temp. So what should I be aiming for (after overclocking)?

As long as it stays under 100C under full load then i wouldn't worry about it. If it gets too hot it will just throttle down.

it says the max temp my card can stand is 120 Degree C.
My card is usually around 60 sth DC

damn video cards can boil water, perhaps comeone can create a case that uses the heat of a new video card to cook noodles or something?

my 6800gt idles at 57, didnt get a chance to see full load temp yet, i think ill play windowed ut2k3 to get an idea

get a video card cooler. im too tired to explain what kind... im half asleep here. but my 9800XT 256MB was at a good 40C idle and 60C on load. i got a heatsink n fan for it... the zalman thingy and ram stays at a good... like 30C on idle and 35C on load and the core is umm 36C idle i think and rarely goes above 40C on load. after i got the vga cooler my PC temps went down a bit. i stay idle at 28C cuz its liquid cooled. before i would stay idle at 100/100+ i dont remember. jeez im tired goodnight

ps: it would probably help you out the same! goodluck.. if you get a vga heatsink cooler piece of metal thing
