whats a engineering sample CPU?

i saw a thread get locked in FS/FT and was wondering whats a engineering sample? is it a beta of a CPU thats gonna come out, that intel sends to mobo developers or somethin? and why in the hell would someone pay a grand for a CPU? ESPECIALLY a intel chip. HAHA
 
ES chips are production chips that don't have a multiplier lock. And if you're gonna mock Intel chips and prices, perhaps you should start it in the AMD forum. :p
 
Intel ES chips as said above have either a fully or partially unlocked multiplier. This makes them very flexible for overclockers. The one in my sig for instance only allows 12x or 13x while I have a P4 1.6 northwood ES that allows the multiplier to be set anywhere from 2x to 16x. Lowest I ever managed to get it to boot at was 400Mhz though, still kinda funny. They make interesting collectors items too. I have a number of oddball ES and its fun to try and get more here and there.
 
how do u get ES chips thou? do you have to work for a certain company?
 
too bad i dont have an intel board. it would sure be interesting try one of these out if i can get my hands on em.

Usuall they get leaked out, intel never really asks for them back from the companies- so they find their ways into friends of friends of friends computers, and go from there. I own one, theyre fun to mess with.

eBay used to be a really easy way to get them, and you can still get older ES chips if you know what to look for, but anything remotely current on eBay gets shut down but intel's legal team. Now its pretty much up to forums to get them and that can get a bit pricy!
