I think that HD 4870 X2 will last for a while and both AMD and nVidia will have a hard time creating a single GPU that can outperform the HD 4870 X2. This is just like how the GTX 280 barely outperforms the 9800 GX2.

Accidentally got in on the HD4850 deal at BBY, so I'm going with that. I was planning on sticking with my HD3850, and maybe grabbing a 2nd while someone upgraded, but now I'm the one trying to sell it.... :)

Will there be a 1GB HD4870 X2? Anand made a mistake by saying that the card is a HD 4870 X2 1GB but actually it is a HD 4870 X2 2GB.

Cant vote cos no options apply as I will get a 4870 when my 8800GT doesnt cut it anymore.
Unless another card appears thats even better performance/value :)

I will upgrade in August and it is most likely that I will get the 4870X2. The GTX 280 is a good card but it just cannot compete with the X2. The only certainty is that I will not go with a dual video cards setup.

Well a 4870x2 is a dual setup in one card.

At $300 for the GTX260, that's a no brainer for me. Got one on the way.

Remember the hidden costs of the dual gpu setups whether its on one card or SLI... power requirements.

My Antec Phantom 550 won't have any problem with a single GTX 260, but I'd hate to try to run two power hungry GPUs on it even if they are on the same card. Buying a $130-200 power supply ups the ante quite a bit and has to be considered. Not to mention that even though things are going failrly will with X2 and SLI/Crossfire compatibility things aren't perfect and I'd rather spend more time playing the games than screwing with drivers and settings to get dual GPUs to work properly.

I have two 4850s, and I'll probably be satisfied with them. Given proper drivers, they should scale easily past a GTX 280 and an HD4870, hopefully even a GTX 280.

I could sell them when the 4870X2 comes out, but let's think about this. Even if by selling them I made the $295 I paid for them AR, plus shipping and handling to the buyer, I'd still have to find another $255 to buy this beast. And what I'll end up with is a card that's much heavier, much hotter, and much more power hungry. I can easily slap aftermarket heatsinks on my 4850s and make them run really cool. Good luck finding any aftermarket cooling for this beast that doesn't involve running water centimeters from your sensitive electronics.

When you already have something as powerful as 4850 CF (again, some sites show it beating the GTX 280, even with the current drivers), is it really worth the hassle?

Only thing thats really hurting ATis chances with me is how badly ATi cards perform in stalker, and thats my favorite game.

I just ran Stalker on 4870 today using 8.7b driver and it performs better than it did on my 8800GT. I turn off dynamic lighting in Stalker though and use static lighting as that has always been a performance killer in Stalker.

i already have 4870 crossfire. i will buy a hd4870x2 and crossfire it with one or both of my hd4870, until i get the scratch for another hd4870x2 or 2 (prob about a week). then if nvidia comes up with something interesting at the refresh i might bounce back there for a few months.

Why is everyone so in love with a $550 R700 when everyone acted like a $650 GT200 was the worst price/performance ratio since the FX series?

for me its the visual improvements. if it improves older games that would be worth quite a bit to me. IMO this is actually being something more to the table then FPS. This is really what I have been waiting for, my 8800GTX does a pretty good job at 1920 by 1200 , I want something more to make be spend money

i have 1 4850 and will purchase another one in a few weeks for CF :D

Comparing a 8800GT for a 4870 is pretty 1 sided, even though stalker is prob the one game that shows the most favoritism twoards nvidia since 3dmark06 and ATi. I side by sided my computer (in sig) with a opty 175 + 7900GT, both setups OC'd (i got a dual 17in monitor setup) set them to the same settings, dynamics lighting and what not, my x1950pro struggles to hit 30 fps, (which is about playable) but once it rains and the lighting strikes, I would spike down to 2 fps. the 7900GT is fully playable, 55 fps most of the times, sometimes it diped down to 30. I tried float32 awhile back, it helped, but the lighting strikes still made it unplayable, and I didn't like float 32 in some of the indoor areas.

This is with the x1950pro, some people were reporting that this specific card has a certain bug (drivers, or gpu I am not sure) that makes it even worse in stalker than other comparable ATi and NV cards. I had to play stalker 2x through getting 150+ FPS in DX8 mode.

Thats another reason I feel compelled to buy NV cards in spite of certain price/performance disparities, the TWIWMTBP program is in alot of the latest games, and if its really down to optimizations in one game over another to get the edge (look at crysis for NV and cod4 for ATi) I would rather pick NV because they are active in more of the games I want to play.

I ordered the GTX 280 yesterday at the egg for $419 AR.

I know the 4870X2 apparently has better performance. And I have a 30" monitor.
I've just had better luck with Nvidia in the past. And I'm interested in the new PhysX capability.

Gonna keep my 8800GT's/Sli for now , my GT's play everything quite nicely @ 1920x1200 .Iam not one to upgrade just to play one or two rare games that may require it . Maybe a bargin-bin pair of 9800GTX's for dirt cheap , or a pair of x260's when prices fall even further ; but basily Iam fine where Iam at .

Im just going to stick with my hd 3870 and do the pencil mod. push it as far as i possible can.

If i kill it, well then ill be forced to go buy a new video card;)

Probably the 4870x2 in the Fall. Either that or a gtx 280.

I need GAMES to push it and play though ;)

See how far the GTX 280 drops in $$, two weeks after the 4870 X2 releases, then decide based on new reviews using 4870 X2's off the shelf from forum users how well the 4870 X2 runs as well as new professional reviews. Decide from that as well as the current prices which would be the best option for me, because by then I think the GTX 280 will have dropped in price as far as it is going to drop until it gets to the point where we are looking at a GTX 380 or whatever. Chances are, nVidea may drop the price to its lowest just before/immediately durring, the release of the 4870 X2 to snub AMD's release and then raise it back up shortly after and being I don't have much faith in AMD, thats what I am waiting on.

I sold my 8800 GTS 320 for 100 bucks then bought 2 more gigs or ram and a 8600 GTS. I went back in time oohhhhohohohohh. I'm gonna wait until the next generation comes out.

As of right now, I am mainly playing TF2... and my current video card plays that game 60+ fps and completely maxed at 1920x1200 no problem.

Until I see some good games that need the extra graphics power, I'd be looking at a 4870X2. Or if the prices change, maybe a GTX 280. The last ATI card I had was a x1650pro though, I'd like to give them a try again.

So you guys are still waiting for the HD 4870 X2 or have you guys moved on with something that are available now.
