Hey guys, looking for help from the best. After having set up two separate file servers, I am realizing that I need a better solution with all my data in one place. This calls for an upgrade!
Current setup:
Server 1 - Main server
OS: Ubuntu 10.04
Some sort of 939 mobo
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+
1GB Ram
3TB Harddrive ATA ST3000DM001-1CH166 formatted in EXT3
Server 2 - Backup server
OS: Freenas 8.0.4
Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+
4GB RAM
1TB HardDrive 7200 rpm formatted in ZFS
Extra harddrives:
3TB External Western Digital WDBAAU0030HBK-01
2TB Internal Samsung HD204UI
Goal:
I want to create one server that can contains all my data, thus not requiring my backup/secondary server. This will require me to purchase some extra space. I'm aiming around 5-6 TB. I currently have ~3TB of actually used space, but I have ~500GB that could be moved to the server. I plan to implement this using a 3 drive ZFS raidz1 array. (giving me the ability to lose one drive, correct?)
Option 1: Buy 2 2TB drives to add to my existing 2TB drive. This would give me 4TB of useable space.
Option 2: Buy 1 3TB drive. Use the existing internal 3TB drive, and the existing external 3TB drive. This would require opening the external harddrive, possibly voiding my warranty. I also bought an extended warranty with the external and I am unsure if it follows the drive or the whole unit.
I want my final solution to be quiet and low powered as it will be on in my bedroom 24/7. Out of all the motherboards and processors I have I believe the Gigabyte board with the 5000+ will be my best solution. The only problem I see is the 4 GB of ram will be slightly low for the amount of storage I will have, but speed is not really a huge concern of mine.
I plan to stick to Freenas as I find it easy to manage, gives me an online GUI, and is easy to use with ZFS.
What is my best solution to reach my goals? My setup doesnt need to be top of the line. Just provide the amount of space I require, be quiet and have a low power draw.
