What would you do? RMA?

Hey guys

I'm curious to see what you would do in my case.
I made some upgrades to my machine one of them being a graphics card. First time around I chose a MSI 6970 Lightning after it was finally in stock. It worked the first week and then proceeded to not work by freezing and give me black screens. Upgrading the PSU to a Corsair AX850 did not solve the problem.
It upset me that this expensive card failed dam you msi/amd! Ok let's try Nvidia which is what I wanted in the first place. I then chose the Gigabyte GTX570 SOC (GV-N570SO-13I). My objective was a fast card that's quite. Fast with out me having to OC it. This was a good option.
This is what I have at the moment but the card makes me uneasy. In two or three ocassions it has failed to post when booting and doing the usual cable, seating, switching slots didn't really resolve the problem. It just started working again. The card presents no problems in windows.
So I submitted a ticket to Gigabyte to see what they would tell me. The response they gave me doesn't give me any confidence at all. This is what I'm paying almost $360+ for?

Here is the ticket:
Hello
I just bought this card and it works most of the time. The problem I'm having is that sometimes when I turn on the PC I get the bios error POST sounds: 1 long 2 short.
When that happens the video card's LED's don't light up or if they do they eventually turn off and the fans run at full speed or fast.
Here is what I've done:
Change PCI-E power cables.
Re-seat the card on the graphic slot.
Change graphic slot.
Use my old graphics card: ATI 4850, when I do this the computer works.
Then I reverted my motherboards bios from F14P back to version F13.
I re-install the GTX570 and it doesn't work.
I just leave the system for a bit...and try again.
Now the machine boots up. I have no idea why...
In windows doing benchmarks (kombuster for an hour, 3dmark 11, Heaven DX11) or playing games there aren't any lockups, artifacts, heat problems. Everything is fine. It's just booting up that it sometimes doesn't work.
I will continue to test with bios version F13 but I don't know if that could affect it.

Please advise what I should do.
Thanks!

Response to ticket:
Dear Customer,

That relates to the video error code, have you tried moving the card over to the 2nd PCIe slot to test the results?
Also for the driver please use the latest directly off nvidia website and test with DX10 instead of DX10 by removing it and reloading DX10

Did I explain my self incorrectly in the ticket?
I feel like getting a refund for a second time with a different card manufacturer.
These "premium" cards don't feel like it at all. :(
Thanks for any input.

Kind of hard to read that but anyways...

To me it sounds like it is either an A) Mobo issue or B) You have an issue in the bios maybe and should go through making sure you have everything setup correctly. Obviously there is something going on if you have issues after multiple PSU's and different video cards. Maybe you got something enabled causing stability issues.

Something only happening randomly on bootup now as you claim seems odd.

Gigabyte has always given me troubles. I would still try to follow through with an rma though.

After a week it has failed again. So no it's not the motherboard bios that might have affected it as I once thought. It just doesn't work sometimes.

I made a vid as well: http://youtu.be/Vg8Fmg2s5ok

Time to send it back.

Wow what an idiot, you clearly said you tried another slot already. Try DX10 by removing dx11 and reinstalling DX10!!??

Anyway, I saw your video and it seems like there could be some kind of compatibility issue between your motherboard and GTX 570 SOC.

A few things could cause it to have that error,

1. You have a limit to how much rom can load up and if you have a videocard bios, a nic bios, raid bios, a raid card with a bios etc... it could cause the system to not detect the videocard. The fix in that situation is to acquire a small footprint bios for the videocard.

I don't think this is the case but try disabling unnecessary devices your not using in the bios, e.g. sata ports your not using, firewire serial ports etc...

Make sure init disp first or primary vga is set to pcie.

There is a known issue with nvidia GTX 500 cards on some motherboards, see if others have noticed the same issue. If you end up returning the card simply get another one, perhaps this was a dud card. Also 6970s and 6950s are MIA at etail for the most part.

Ninja Edit: Try and getting a pencuil and use the eraser to gentrly clean the gold contacts on the videocard, I'm referring to the ones that go in the pcie slot. Make sure to get off all the rubber and reseat the card. It's a very old tech trick and may help.

rma it to Gigabyte
they have given me trouble on the two mobo's that would work most of the time and i had to sent back to them two times and they payed for shipping back to them and sent new mobo's .

2 graphics cards faulty? sounds like an issue with your motherboard/cpu. I would try the card in a friends computer to see if it works there.

Have you ran memtest?

With your 4850 in have you ran any stress tests to see if the CPU or motherboard is failing.

I would also choose to rma the card. You paid to much to put up with a hassle that you can't easily figure out.

1. ehh sounds strange to do that when the mobo can do two or tri sli if I recall. How can it not handle just one video card.

2. Primary disp, yeah I had it to pcie initially and it would still do the same thing.

3. You would think a gigabyte video card would work on a gigabyte motherboard lol

rma it to Gigabyte

Ok lol hopefully it's not my mobo ;)

Yeah the mobo comes into question but when the GTX570 doesn't work I can place it on the 2nd PCI-E slot put my 4850 boot to win7 and the GTX570 doesn't come up in the devices list. In other words the rest of the computer continues to function while the new card doesn't.

Yes I've ran memtest, I've ran the OCZ 1600 ram @ 1066 aka what the bios defaults it to and same thing.

With the 4850, I've been running for a while now and I've tested overclockign the cpu just for kicks and no problem.

I just put in a refund request so I'll be sending it back tomorrow.
Now...what to do.
Try an MSI 570 twin frozr III from amazon...
EVGA...ugh I'm not into their stock design but maybe their tech people are a bit brighter.
Buy a 600T White and stick with the 4850 a bit longer...
(I don't really want an AMD card.)

If you are confident in the motherboard/cpu/ram you have, as you suggested; RMA the card.

As for a new nvidia card, I've always used EVGA. Their cards are pretty basic but they work and their support is no-nonsense and speaks english. You can actually talk to them on the phone.

It's odd that two top end cards were flaky? I'm still not convinced your MB or OS isn't a problem. Did you try a fresh W7 install or at least sweeping out the GPU drivers?

Good luck,:)

Yeah it was a fresh install of win7 since I got an SSD as well.
Why do you guys bring up drivers if the problem only happens when the machine boots up?
There are no drivers and or windows at that point.

Could it be the motherboard? I'm not sure, my 4850 works fine on it. Hopefully not that way I wont have to spend $200 on an old platform mobo ~_~.

After reading all the replies.I have though of a few things to look at.One is PCI-E frequency,is it set at 100?If not make sure it is set there. If it is try bumping it up some and no better results bump it back down below 100.It's just a thought.Other than that I would look in to the 8 pin on the mother board. It supplies extra power to the pci lanes. If your mother board has a fault there then a higher power card might not power up correctly.Like mentioned before I would try it out in another computer to verify that it is the card.I have a good feeling that your having a problem with the mother board supplying enough power to the pci lanes.Another test would be to put a known good high end card in and try it out.

Yeah, I definately would try the card in another computer first if I could. I think a high end video card is causing problems because it needs more power/resources than your 4850.

It's not an issue with the drivers, I agree with Ducrider748, it's seems like a power issue with the motherboard. Which would explain the freezing and black screens of the AMD card and also the no video error on post with the Nvidia card.

Well I don't have another motherboard to test on.
That would mean I have to buy a new one in order to test the video card.
Doing so would also not let me get a refund for the card and instead just be able to RMA the card if that's what it is.

Any suggestions for a mobo in case I decide to purchase one?
Dam you sandy bridge mobos that cost the same as my x58...

Edit: Hmm the mobo is stil under warranty as well ~_~

As an update:

It's been almost two weeks since I got a THIRD video card. Is it too soon to be posting? Not sure but anyways...

This time I went back to MSI but got a GTX570 Twin Frozr iii. Also I ordered it from Amazon rather than newegg (they were out of stock at the time). The first interesting thing I noticed was that when I received the card from Amazon it was different than the msi 6970 lightning from newegg. The 570 from Amazon had a taped bag. I don't recall having to remove a tape from the 6970 (I may be mistaken though). What was truely different was that the 570's heatsink (the entire silver part) had a sort of heath shrink wrap on it so I had to peel it off. That made me feel that it was really a new card. Looking back, the 6970 lightning from newegg didn't have the adhered plastic to the card which makes me think if it was really a new card or one that was returned as a "oh nvm I don't want this card".

All that aside my new 570 works! :) I haven't had any trouble with it even with my i7 920 @4.2Ghz. It is a tad louder than the gigabyte 570 but who cares at this point as long as it works.

I'll post pics later and update if anything happens.
