You had an AMD X2 4800+ (939) and $800.00 sitting on your desk, and you needed a new Mb, GPU and memory?

For days now, I have been reading reviews and discussions. I find myself no closer to a decision than I was when I started. I am turning to you peeps for your recommendations. Keep in mind that I have no intentions to oc. I just want something that works well together. Also, I only need one x16 pci-e slot and firewire ability.

ATX Mb: ?
GPU: x1900xtx or 7900gtx
Memory: 2 gigs of ?

sell the 4800 and get an intel.

thats what I would do.

Well If you don't plan on overclocking, then Asus is likely the way to go. They are very stable, and easy to work with. I'd look at OCZ for RAM maybe corsair too. Then pick up whatever graphics card you like at the time.Maybe a 7900Gt or something

put it all together and i think you will be happy

you can get a DFI ultra-d on the FS forum for $80
and you might find the ram

and you could go with the 7900GTX but alot less card..... so that is what I would buy

totally pointless to get that MB and ram...He said he had no plans of overclocking.

Thanks for the replies. It's true, I will not over clock.
I can only afford to upgrade every couple of years, if I'm lucky.

My current system is an amd 2500+ on a gigabyte K7 Triton board with 1 gig of pc2700 and a radeon 9800 pro (128) all powered by a 500watt psu. The best thing about my system is the SyncMaster 213T monitor.

As you can see, I am due for an upgrade and want simply want a trouble free combination.

Thanks again for your input

Vbox, as a fellow partial upgrader at a time on a minimal budget I can recommend the following to get you going and save you some cabbage.

1. MB: nForce4 SLI motherboard for $98.99:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136164

This DFI model has your Firewire in with the other mix.

I know that you stated you didn't need SLI (or more acurately multi-GPU), but you miss out on a potential upgrade path that is absent if you go any other approach than either an SLI or CrossFire motherboard can offer, an additional PCI-e slot that is capable of supporting up to either x8 or x16 channels (depending on chipset). These don't have to be restricted to just graphics cards, but any future very high-speed card that needs more than x1 channels that the x1 PCI-e slots provide on the other non-SLI motherboards. In addition, it's there if you eventually decide to go multi-GPU. I noticed you kept your Radeon 9800 for some time, it's likely you'll hold onto whatever you get now for a while as well.

2. Video: MSI NX7900GT-VT2D256EHD $269.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127218

The MSI model I listed is one of the rare "HDCP ready" cards that acutally has the HDCP eprom on board and ready for future Vista HDTV, HD-DVD and Blue-Ray content in all of their glory. If you don't know the impact, google HDCP and you'll quickly see why this is needed in the long run.

3. Memory: Corsair XMS 2G memory kit $199.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145574

Fantastic memory, solid performer with a CAS of 2.

All of this comes to $566 so far, now for the next step:

Wait, what's this about a next step, I only asked for mb, ram and video? Because you list a system that is an Athlon XP based setup with a Radeon 9800. The problem is that even high-end power supplies of that time have a problem supporting the peripheral needs of the new procs, video cards and motherboards. If you don't seriously consider a decent power supply, you may be sorry. You'll deffinetly be sorry if you get a 7900GTX or X1900XT and are still not mult-GPU with a lower end power supply from the Athlon XP era. That said:

4. PSU: Antec TruepowerII TPII-550 $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103931

I'd recommend this at the very minimum. For a system you expect to hold onto for some time and possibly for future multi-GPU purposes I'd recommend the following:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817194001 $149.00
This product is rated for all the current multi-gpu setups (except for Quad-SLI with two 7950GX2's you'll need about 1000W for that) and would be a solid performer for many years to come. I've a lower end than that one and I've been very happy for some time now.

Note about SLI chipset recommendation with DFI motherboard or competitor. nForce4 SLI chipsets have been around for a while and have been shown to be "solid, stable" performers. In addition, while it's true that SLI multi-GPU mode is the only "officially" supported multi-GPU configuration for this chipset at this time that could change. After all it's only the drivers detecting the chipset that prevent CrossFire and SLI from operating on each respective competing platform at this point in time. I suspect that soon you'll see the ability to perform SLI on any multi PCI-E x16 slot board in time to help counter the AMD/ATI merger.

Again even of you don't go with any of my other suggestions, please review your existing power supply carefully in terms of the demand you'll need for the newer hardware. Please replace it if there is "any" question on if it'll be enough for your next rig.

Good luck!

Wow man, I'm speechless!

You brought up some key points, and you have put me on the right track to my latest build. I've placed my order today and dropped $877 at newegg. I'll be picking up my psu locally and hope to be up and running by this weekend. Your in-depth response is much appreciated.

Now I can only hope that I do not end up with compatibility issues.
I'll submit the results after it's running.
Wish me luck.
