What would you call this?

Compare e-penises and get it over with. Oh nevermind, you're already to that step. Have a good honeymoon!

boy, you are sure in a hurry to see what you are euphemistically calling our "e" penises.
that aside, my remark was only directed at the fact that its not a clovertown on a p5b, but some kind of cpuid glitch. that "#1 retail" link is on the bottom of all my posts, and not directed to anyone in particular.

And gratuitously overdone and probably breaking rule # 25, as its says your sig is for that purpose don't put some crap like your name, etc. at the end of every post. IF you like bragging about it so much, put it in your sig. And Yes Vanilla Gorilla you have an e-penis bragging problem, admitting it is the first step. Get over the denial. I like to brag about my OC's, etc... a little bit, but I don't have to add it to the end of every post.

As for the CPU-Z, its just a Kentsfield misidentified.

Clovertown = Kentsfield
just like Conroe = Merom = Woodcrest, at first some samples were showing the wrong names there too.

Either CPU-Z or BIOS misidentifying it. If you look at 3dMark2001 scores on P5W's it calls Conroes "Pentium 4"s, on P5B's it calls them "Unknown", and on DS3's it calls them "Celerons"!

Well you are right that its the same as Kentsfield, but it shows up as Clovertown because it is a Xeon part. First versions of Clovertowns for some reason came in 775 pinout, and the first bensley boards came in universal socket which could hold 775 or 771 processors.

I'd venture to guess this is what a Xeon 3000 series will be like, maybe 4 of the pins aren't being used.

If you're wondering, I have it stable at 2.67GHz/1333FSB/DDR2-833 at the moment with air cooling. Prime gives me errors but everything else is stable. I'll try to push it more, haven't even loaded the new BIOS, still playing with stock BIOS.

Not really, I'm seeing about 42c idle at 2.67 and 39c idle at 2.13. Also my ambient is around 32c or so. Maybe that's the difference between the clovertown and kentsfield varieties.

LOL... no they didn't. I've had the very first clovertowns and there has never been a Socket T (LGA775) version of it, nor has there ever been a way to order a socket T version. You're wrong... that's a kentsfield, probably a VERY early stepping which is why it's misrepresenting it in CPUz. It's not uncommon. If you don't believe me give me the QDF number off the CPU and I'll tell you exactly what stepping/version it is.

This is kinda correct. There was an option for a universal socket, but it wasn't so you could use desktop CPUs.... it was for early power on with Socket T Noconas.

Or maybe Tomshardare & other people just had early samples that ran hotter. Very possible.

For the final product, they might cherry pick 2 cores for the lowest power/heat dissapation. And maybe use a lower voltage.

Trust me this is a Clovertown, and there are no markings as these were very early samples. I'm not sure if it was meant for socket T but it fits perfectly and is running great, it might have been designed for that universal socket. The stepping is seen in the CPUZ screen shot, B0. I don't think you'll be able to find any B0 Kentsfields anywhere, probably B2 or newer.

Umm... no it's not. It's got an incorrect CPUID since it's an early sample, not uncommon at all, and there were B0 Kentsfields. There were NO Clovertowns in LGA775.

We can go on forever like this. I just know that we received these parts intended to be used in a Blackford board, but since our board didn't have universal socket we had to wait for Socket J parts. I'm pretty certain that if you took a desktop Socket T CPU and put in in a universal socket it would not work.

And to Vanilla, I'm using Zalman 9500. I think in the THG article they said temp was close to 965EE, but in my rig 965EE was around 60C at idle. I'm happy with more cores and lower temp/power.

I don't think you understand...Poncho works for Intel, and he knows what he's talking about.

edit: why does it matter anyway? Clovertown and Kentsfield are the same damn chip anyway. Even it is was a "clovertown" in an lga775 package, that would basically make it a Woodcrest anyway

Yea, the person that sent them to you probably doesn't know what he's doing. Again, not uncommon. :D

wal-mart?

anyway, like I edited my post above to say why does it matter anyway? kentsfield and clovertown are the same chip anyway...the only difference is the socket...

Alright, well I will update with what I can overclock with this processor. Also if new CPU-Z versions come out, we'll see if I'm right or not.

Honestly... it won't matter what version of CPUz you run, it'll still mis-represent the CPU. You said that it doesn't have markings on the IHS which means its a VERY early sample, and most likely one with a different CPUID that CPUz doesn't even know. I've dealt with this on my own system since I have the same issue with CPUz not displaying the correct info and my CPU doesn't have markings ont he IHS. Not a big deal man... just letting you know that's a Kentsfield, not a clovertown. But like the other guy said... they are the same CPU. LOL

I got it up to 2.8GHz 350FSB so far. It's pretty warm though, at load it's hitting 70C+, so I'm a little hesitant of going any higher. I guess with water I could go pretty high.

Anyone want to go at it? I have a couple of these CPUs.

have you checked to see if there's any throttling going on? 70C seems like it would be borderline with the throttling temps.

haha and hells yeah I would love to play with one of those :D too bad it's probably worth more than my life is.
