A server is to be built.


P4 2.4-2.66ghz (P4B)
1gb PC-2100
adequate harddrive space (a single 80, most likely)
DVD-ROM
vidcard w/ DVI.

This will host BF42 & COD games & LANs, and on the T1 line @ my apartment. Any file serving will be done w/ my external firewire enclosure, as that's where my movies & mp3s are.



there are two paths for me to take.

the universal path...and the dedicated path.


the Universal path gives me this:
regular ATX tower.
Abit IS7 motherboard
plenty of expansion


the Dedicated path gives me this:
Shuttle XPC
845G motherboard
limited expansion




Now, all I need this system to do is run 1 hdd(maybe 2), a DVD-ROM (I'll have a DVD burner hooked up externally as needed), and have 2 network cards (1 onboard for LAN maintenance, 1 PCI for WAN serving)



Here are the pros & cons

Pros:
Universal:
more expansion capability
cheaper

Dedicated:
Easier to take to LANs
I can stuff it under my bed.
I can set it on top of my UPS
I can stack the cubes. (my SB65G2 could go on top of or underneath the server, and secured via straps) (any help I can get is worthwhile at LANs, since I have 20" LCD to take with me)

Cons:
Universal:
size
noise (potentially)
requires upfront purchase of vidcard

Dedicated
limited expansion
more expensive



so, I'm basically weighing between the lesser of the evils.
What would you do?

The LAN friendly Shuttle? or the Jack-Of-Trades Tower?
 
if you are going to want to take it to a lan and not keep it up and running at your house 24/7, make it as mobile as posible! i have a full size server i carry around with me to lan parties...wish it where a shuttle!!!!

can i suggest you use a bigger hdd and put your movies on it? it would make dl's hair faster and i would think more reliable. (no facts to back this up, just my opinion.)

show us some pics either way when you get it done!

and I'm already using a 200gb for movies & Mp3s...it's over half full.

I'm just saying that if I need to share files, I don't need them on the drive in the server, I can just pop in the firewire plug and be on my way. So, internal expansion for drives isn't of the utmost importance, as I used to have thought it been (ahem)

now I wanna trade it off for a 9600 or something....something I can actually use.

I was a different computer geek back then. The shuttles spoiled me.

How loud is that sob when it's running?
 
I think the shuttle can hold 2 hdds, but you cant have a floppy. I would say if you need a floppy get an external drive and put one 160gig hdd in the shuttle to begin and expand later when need be into the 3 1/2 floppy spot.
 
Are you familiar with the concept known as micro atx?

This would be the best of both worlds - As much expansion as you'll reasonably need, room for a few drives, and a compact size. Plus, you can get a better, more trustworthy full-size PSU, which is always a great thing.

I'd also wager, that on it's side, it'd fit under your bed. Slow-spinning fans will keep the noise down as well.
 
i too would go for the shuttle over that beast. no matter how many 1337 fans it may have, and even though its on casters.

Dude, 100 gigs of movies? That's pretty good... I have about 150 gigs on my machine, with another 80-120 gigs on CD.

Use the server for the games and whatnot, and leave your movies in your main box. Don't forget F@H and it might be a good idea to get a PI 133 or something and set it up with Linux for a router/firewall. Maybe even put together another box with a 1ghz CPU or something for a fileserver? I dunno, I'm not running a game or other server, except for a fileserver (my main box, just a few install apps on the fileserver part).
 
youve got a T1 line at your apartment? is it shared? do you have to pay per gig?

I powered it up once with all 20 fans.

the loudest fan was the PSU.

needless to say, I was running Panaflo L1As.


The system was designed to run a decked out dual AMD system w/ 10k & 15k SCSI drives...

now, it's doomed to sit in my closet through 4 armageddons.

I don't have any fans in it right now, but whomever wants it can take all the fans & grills I ahve for an extra $25 (I have a dozen 120 grills, dozen 92s, 80s....1 120 fan, over a half dozen 92mms..and who knows how many 80s.

I had started work (and finished 2/3 of it) on 12/7 switches for the fans...well, 12/7/off for the 2 I didn't finish working on. I'll throw those in as well...
 
Ok, I'm still tempted.
My main rig won't ever be portable... not with dual cpus, 6 cards, 11 HDs, and 3CRTs. I've already got 2 boxes so that big thing might actually make it easier to move around. (On less trip lol). I'm gonna have to find an FC-AL card w/ an internal connector though. That could be a bit of a challenge.
 
Hmmm...if you are interested, there's a chance I'll be in Rockford on Saturday...taking the girlfriend out, but I doubt she'd mind if we met somewhere for a quick exchange?



and to keep the post on topic...I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the shuttle...now it's just a matter of ordering it so it won't arrive this weekend.
