What would cause this?

My computer worked perfectly before I put in some more ram that a friend gave me.

I had 1.3 gigs of pc-2700 samsung, my friend gave me 256 more for me to try.. I put it in, turned on the cpu.. and no image was displayed. I took out the new ram... same problem. Only untill i reset the cmos was I able to get an image displayed.

Although an image was displayed, it still wouldnt get past the boot screen, it froze. I took out my 1 gig stick and tried it with the single 256 stick.. it booted and ran. But from then on out.. my computer is basically useless. I cant run ANY 3d applications, computer is very unstable while using any type of media (music or videos), and even cuts off when browsing the internet... When i put the 1 gig stick back in, it never gets past the boot screen, so I am assuming the ram is shot.

So basically, I have a useless computer... 3d mark 2001 will run like.. 1 test for about 5 seconds before it restarts the computer..

I did order a new mobo, cpu, and vid card... but i would like to get this one working, so i can sell it.

Any ideas? Could it be the PSU? I dont think it is.. its a 350watt Enermax.

Thanks

Looks like your memory is fried. I would tell you to run memtest88 but, you can't get into windows.....

You don't need to be in Windows to run Memtest. Download the floppy version on the PC your using to post with, and boot from it on your other system.

Yeah, I have come to terms with the fact that the 1 gig is shot.. but what about the stability issues when it does load into windows? Bad mobo? or CPU?

Edit- Sorry.. i should have mentioned... I put a brand new stick of Samsung pc-3200 in and got the same stability problem.. I have ruled out memory as being the cause.
