I am looking for a laptop for general use:
Web surfing, watching video, office word.
Most intense thing i would be doing is converting video formats to play on xbox etc...

trying to figure out what processor speed would be overkill for my needs...

if a 1.3ghz would be fine then i will go with that rather than breaking the bank to get something beefy in a 13" - 15" laptop...

assuming you have ruled out atom processors
i would say a 1.3ghz c2d would be fine
certainly not a single core 1.3ghz
the 1.3ghz costs as much as a regular 2ghzish c2d so you might as well go with one of those

but the video encoding is probably going to take damn near forever.

currently on my 2.66ghz c2d with 2gig ram i am looking at about 30minutes for the encoding i do...

so what would estimate for the 1.3ghz c2d?

what speed would i be looking at to try and keep it resonable?

EDIT: Read above post. What laptop models are you currently looking at?

looking at 12" to 15" laptops

dunno anything about the atom processors but noticed they were only really in the 10" which is too small...

currently was looking the following but if a smaller processor will do the trick then that opens up a few more options...

Toshiba L500 087
Intel Pentium T4400 2.2GHz 800, 15.6" HD 200 CSV LD, DDR3 1066 2GB RAM, 2.5 SATA 320GB HDD 5400, Intel GL40 Graphics, Realtek 802.11(b/g/n), VGA/Mic, Windows 7 32/64bit Home Premium

or maybe (this is probably out of my price range though so more likely the Toshiba):

compaq cq41
Intel Core i3 330 2.16GHZ, 14.1", 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD, ATI Radeon HD4350 with 512MB Dedicated Graphics, Intel 802.11 b/g/n, Windows 7 Premium
