you forgot the most important part what resolution is your monitor?

If 1080p then GTX 1060 is good($160 for 3gb and $200 for 6gb are best deals but hard to come by)

I havent seen a 3gb 1060 under $200 for awhile now. In fact there is hardly anything under $800. I got lucky and bought two RX 560s for my kids this morning from amazon $109 each, now they are sold out. If i was Op. Id keep existing video card, upgrade cpu to I5-8400 or Ryzen 5 1600. Biggest problem with this, DDR4 prices are crazy and ryzen + or ryzen 2 is launching in march.

If you have no plans to upgrade that display (though you really, really should), a GTX1060 in any flavor would be a huge upgrade.

Like mentioned above a display upgrade would make a big difference visually. However, the higher up you go on resolution the more $$$ you must spend for GPU power. At 1680x1050 I bet even your 7870 is still playing most games well.

What's your reason for upgrading? I find it hard to believe your system is struggling running most things at medium-high with perhaps AA settings turned down at that res.

I'd be considering a full system upgrade along with a new monitor. So I'd suggest saving for a while if your current still does what you need it to.

If you can find a decent deal on an RX 570 or 580, I'd say go for it because you're overdue for a monitor upgrade and the vast majority of affordable monitors have Freesync which is brilliant for gaming. Gsync is great, but their monitors are far rarer and considerably more expensive.

If you're on a tight budget I recommend buying a 1080P monitor for around $129 and a GTX 1060 3GB for around $240.
Your I5 2500 + gtx 1060 would be plenty for 1080P gaming.

I am running pubg at 60+ fps with 2500K and gtx 1060 6GB at 1440P (reduced settings) and it looks great.

Op didnt mention intended use, but i think we all agree his monitor needs the most love. Newegg had 29" LG 2560x1080 monitors for $155 after coupon code. I use one myself and absolutely love it for productivity, web surfing, 99% RGB color, and 3rd person view or cockpit style games where the 21:9 really benefits. My first gen 29" lg seems to have input lag or otherwise is not good for online FPS. I have a variety of hardware at home my kids use for various games, an i5 + 7870 should play anything on medium settings -- but the monitor that he spends all of his time staring at would benefit the most. I would not buy the cheapest monitor you can find either, id almost recommend a 2560x1440 or one of these LG 21:9 monitors. If you are into FPS games, Best buy has an HP omen 24.5" 144hz monitor for $189. 144hz is a big deal for twitch shooters.

Maybe try to find a decent priced GTX970, GTX980, R470, or R480?

I am somewhat in same boat as OP, recently updated my main box and thought I needed to upgrade my card. After looking at prices, on the egg, I though well, how about another 280x...these prices are NUTS.

I would rather a new motherboard + CPU. Only fter that, bigger PSU and video card. The CPU matters quite a lot when it comes to getting better minimum frame rates at a lower resolution like 1680 x 1050.
