What workloads require faster desktop CPUs?

What in the desktop computer space can't be achieved with today's hardware? July 2015. A better question may be, what workloads are still heavily dependent on single or single digit number of threads?

Gaming at very high frame rates in older games or at low quality settings. 120 fps in 3d for instance.

Let's assume you can run any Intel or AMD cpu in the desktop platform including Xeons and Opterons.

Any OpenGL program, as all the graphics commands are serialized.

This affects applications like X Plane 10, where the fastest single threaded CPU is the best option (what can be offloaded into other threads already has been). X Plane 10 will pin a 4790k at 4.5 GHz if the settings are maxed out.
