You can use a Molex to SATA adapter.

You can use a 2.5" hard drive. They are not as fast as 3.5" drives (no matter what the specs are) but they are smaller, use less power and give off less heat.

The WD Black 2.5 drives are pretty good. You can also consider one of the hybrid drives with ssd cache (Seagate has one and I think WD just came out with one) or set up your own cache with an ssd.

How are the WD Blacks 2.5 compared to the Samsung F1 3.5?
 
If the WD 2.5 are as good as the 3.5 in terms of reliability then I would go WD. I have had more problems with the Samsung F1 units. The Samsungs are more prone to clicking noises and just plain right out dying. I do consider the Samsung F1 good but WD Black is just more reliable in my experience. Again, that is just in my own experience.

My old WD Scorpio black 320gb just felt a lot slower than my 3.5" drives but I just took a look at a few benchmarks and the WD Black 2.5" seems to be faster than the Samsung F1. Maybe they have improved or I had a dud. It is a bit hard to tell because no one really tests them against each other.

They did not test the Samsung F1. But it basically shows that 2.5" SSHDs(Hybrid SSD and HD) were the fastest, then 3.5" Drives then regular 2.5" drives.
 
Honestly, if you are thinking of going with a hard drive, 2.5" OR 3.5" you might as well just go with a hybrid drive, there is practically no downsides, and they are pretty cheap. In fact the 2TB Seagate one that I have been looking at is on sale for $99 for black friday ATM.

And holy cow, it looks like they have a 4TB hybrid drive now too, last time I looked the 2TB was the biggest. Still only 8GB of NAND though :/ Not enough, BUT still better than nothing. I mean if you are planning on using an HDD anyways, I figure you might as well go hybrid, as long as the price is right.

I think I'll just use 1 low speed HDD(like a WD Red), and then buy another ssd once prices go down for games.I feel like having 2 HDDs is hard in this case.

Just remember that Noctua says its not to be used with cpus that have a TDP greater than 95w and its also not recomended for overclocking purposes.

So do you have a replacement you would recommend?
Edit...I'm not going to be overclocking and the Intel website says the Max TDP is 84 watts. So I should be OK?

Harsaphes, I'm thinking of a similar build to yours so let's bounce ideas.

If you're not overclocking, why the K variant? Unless you're considering of undervolting/clocking? If not, you could spare a few $/€ by getting the normal 4670.

Also, which EVGA 780 are you considering?
 
Daydr3am3r, my bad, the "k" wasn't suppose to be there. I spent ALL night looking at cards and I'm still nowhere near a decision. I'm leaning towards a "reference" myself and since the case isn't here yet I'm holding out on the chance the prices might drop closer to Christmas. You?

Just installed a Chrome extension called That Is Worth which tracks prices for Amazon. Select product and what you want to pay. Notifies you if the price drops. Just FYI.

Used to have "Invisible Hand" for a similar thing but didn't use it much, will check "that is worth it", thanks.

My main problem is that I'm in Europe so prices here are not as competitive, especially as NVIDIA lags behind AMD that now makes it more painful. However I was aiming towards a EVGA 780 03G-P4-2783, since:

- It has a blower design, so no heat dissipated inside the case
- 780 consumes less power than a 290, essential for the 450W profile
- More silent
- As much as I'd like for AMD to thrive and breath down NVIDIA's neck, I feel NVIDIA's offerings are more
polished and less problematic generally.

So I think I'm gonna put the CPU and gpu under water.

Would it be better to use CM's version of the H220, or buy a separate pump and rad?(like the apogee 2)
 
In the end the H220 won't beat a high quality well thought through custom watercooling set.

But screw that! I'm buying H220!
 
Evga ACX cooling or Blower GPU - which one is better for our gorgeous case. Look like ACX cooling is better to blow the heat out through the base of the case, right?

We are going to have almost identical setups except I'm going for a normal 780 and skipping the mechanical drive and using my NAS. Let me know when you find a m.2 ssd that size available
 
Wife called me a little earlier. Looks like my BF buy came in the mail. Samsung 840 Evo 500Gb SSD. One more part for my M1 build. Still undecided on mobo and cooling. Is anyone else thinking a SSD + one 3.5" hdd build?

Two questions:
1) Why is no one going with closed loop coolers like the ones from Corsair for CPU only cooling? Is the thought that the 12cm air coolers like those from Noctua do a better job with less noise?

2) Anyone have plans for the third expansion slot? I was thinking a USB bracket for internal headers but since I've got the ASUS Impact I already have more USB ports than I know what to do with

Looking at the Google Drive spreadsheet, it seems like most people who are going CLC have chosen the H220. Since space is a premium people are able to shorten the tubes of the H220 if needed. I think there was already a person who posted their M1 build with a H100i, but commented that the long tubing made for a very tight fit.

I'm using the H60 and there are a few people using that according to googledocs and even a H80i.

I already installed this in my system but I'm not satisfied with the quality of the sata
port, the metal connection at the sata area detaches easily. So I ordered this off ebay and I'm waiting for it to come:

Reason I use this is because I have 5 disks (SSD and non-SSD) in my system and my Ivy bridge board only has four sata ports. I need an extra sata port which I'm getting from my esata port.
The power port also allows me to troubleshoot drives externally by using an esata port. People might say a external drive dock works as well, but a drive dock with its power adapter is significantly heavier and more voluminous than one molex to sata power cable plus an esata to sata cable, and that doesn't sit well with my idea of a fully portable SFF system.

I´m having buzz / hum noise coming from asus impact audio output.

Anyone have a guess how to solve it?

I don´t know if is my PSU. If I unplug my speakers from audio output and plug on my phone I can´t hear noise anymore.

There were other reports of noise coming through the Impact's audio.. don't recall anyone finding a solution, though. Could always use a small outboard USB DAC, but that kinda sucks, since the "improved audio" was supposed to be a selling point for getting the Impact over the Deluxe/Pro.

You could try contacting ASUS since this seems to be a common issue, though I've heard their support and customer service is shit.

Just curious.. do you get the buzz with speaker plugged into the back, the front or both?

Got my case a little while ago. Planning on getting everything for a Christmas build. Bit late I know, but who knows. No Gfx at the moment, though this may change in 6-12 months. May overclock, but will decide later.

I'm going for the L9i CPU fan as I want it to be quiet, with possible overclocking at a later stage. Have seen good reviews for this fan.

Main use-case will be photoshopping plus ripping my dvd/bluray collection. But I do like multitasking :D

I have no idea which case fans to use and where. Am interested in a quiet, but cool build (aren't we all :cool:), but with no Gfx not sure how many I need. I may just go with a noctua A9 fan for the back and then buy additional ones as I go along. Although I do like the idea of a 120mm fan :confused:

Where do you think I should put the HDDs? I was thinking of the HDD along the side, but I have had issues with overheating with these drives and had to RMA one because of it. My fault using an enclosure with no fan. Still, am a bit wary. What do you all think?

It's a bit of a boring build, but I'm trying to plan a little for the future too (Gfx, overclocking, fans etc). Thanks for the help and fingers crossed for all those who haven't received their amazing cases yet.

I have unplugged front panel audio and it seems better, not perfect but bearable.
After I get my new cooler I will try to re-route front audio wire and plug again.

About back and front audio:
- Front audio it is just a bit noiser than back.
They should be very similar since Asus advertise there is a "real" link between both so you can use it as a bridge even if your PC is off.

There should be a setting in BIOS for "front panel type" maybe try switching from "HD" to "AC97" or vice-versa. And def try to route your front panel cable away from PSU and GPU, or anything else that could cause interference.
 
I would like to run a GTX 780ti in my M1 build, but I don't know if the SS PSU can handle it. I will have a 4770k, two SSDs, and possibly three Noctua case fans. Anyone know if this would work, or if not, what my options are to allow a 780ti to operate in the M1?

Check out the power consumption compared to the Titan/780. Seems like it would work. SS is coming out with a 550w 1Q of 2014 but that is a long ways off if your planning to build soon.

Thank you for the help. That will be too far off since my M1 will be here very soon. I am relieved that there is a 550w SFF PSU from SS coming next year though. I will likely just swap the 450 for the 550 when they release, and sell the 450 for a good price to another M1 owner who hasn't purchased a PSU yet.
 
I decided to go with the Gigabyte z87n-wifi. The price was just too good to pass up, but the socket layout is pretty lousy. Can anyone recommend a good hsf that won't conflict with the pci-e slot and the ram? The Noctua NH-L9I seems to be the only one that doesn't block one thing or another.
