What will ATI's answer to SLI be?

With SLI on the horizon developed by Nvidia, I was wondering what ATI's response will be. I know the performance boost from having two cards is not double, in most situations about 50%, and SLI is very expensive! But, better performace and even more frames per second is what we all crave. There will be plenty of people opting to build there new rigs based on this new architecture. What will ATI's answer be?

well 2/3 of the articles that you read at the mo say that sli is crap, becasue you need xeons and tumwater chipset.
ati focuses on this, however with the arrival of nforce 4 ultra sli, and kt890 pro, dual grpahics cards is a viable option.
e.g. in everything but doom 3, dual 6600gt beats a 6800 ultra, for about £50 less.
though this amount is probably made back in the £100 motherboard required, SLI is not solely for big tech heads, and is indeed a viable option.
i would doubt that ATI could replicate nvidia's SLI, as they have patented it. and they can;t do alienware's video array (however this does work with ati cards), as alienware has pateneted that.
there could actually be nothing that ati can do.....
i think that this year it will be solely enthusisast, however it may start showing up more and more as time goes on. of course it will never be wholly mainstream, however it could very well be somehting that many gamers on a budget do (i.e. 2 mainstream cards sli), pulling money away from ati mainstream offerings. however only time will tell

If you SLI two 6800 Ultras, yes it is expensive. But you can also SLI two 6600GTs. So SLI is not off reach. No doubt Nvidia will be intoducing more cards with SLI support.

ATI has their own method, which is called AFR.

Marketing trash talk. They've already started with the FUD last month. Pretty sad, actually.

It seems they have little choice but to try dual vpus on a single card or dual cores or something of that ilk. I could be wrong but I think that is where most of their research money was going anyway.

A lot of their R&D funding is going towards dual-core designs, as such a design would have several advantages over SLI. And, ultimately, it would probably start to serve a more general solution in the future (that is to say, dual-core is more likely to become standard than SLI).

However, my team (at Team Radeon) is currently working on a dual X800 XT system, but I can't say more than that.

Dual core means nothing when it comes to gpu's

^lol

CPU bottlenecks pretty much make SLI useless. As soon as we see hardware that's able to take advantage of having two video cards in the system I'll rethink my opinion of SLI being complete shit.

Not true. It meant going out of business if you were 3Dfx! :p

Everyone in this thread must be 16 not to remember that fiasco and speculating on "how great" SLI is going to be. The only people who entertain the idea of dual cards are hardcore enthusiast and most of them are dreaming. What does worry me is that I know ATi has plan to release their next core during the first half of next year, but I have not heard what nVidia's plans are? Anyone know? They must have something, because I pray to God they are not relying on SLI technology to carry them through the next gen of cards. They would know better than anyone the fallacy in that...

The second nVidia puts a second GPU on their cards is the instant I am selling their stock. ;)

Um... I'm sorry?

On a side not, it was stated a while back on Anandtech on ATi's roadmap that it will be Dual GPU, not Dual Core if I remember correctly.

What? Maybe you and I are thinking of 2 meanings for dual-core. I don't mean 2 seperate gpu's on one pcb or anything like sli

ATI does not need SLI at the moment, nor do games. I think the biggest improvements need to come in the effientcy of the PCI-e data in order to maximize it. Hell, every game doesn't even max out good ole AGP 8X.

So you dont remember the Matrox G400 MAX do you?

Then again, Matrox isnt in the gaming card business anymore...

You mean when ATI comes out with their version of SLI right.

Today's games [D3/FC] are GPU bound at 16x12 4xAA 8xAF. That's where you'd see a nice boost from SLI.

^You may be able to increase resolution and AA/AF, but you're still gonna see those minimum frames held back by your CPU.

What about the G400 MAX?

Of all the ATi phanboyz out there you must be my favourite! That's funny stuff dude. :D

According to your logic, the frame-rate in games is the same for 800x600 as it is for 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF because the CPU is a bottleneck to performance!!

While the CPU is becoming MORE of a bottleneck than ever before (due to things like more sophisticated AI etc.) the video card still makes a huge difference to high-res+AA+AF gaming frame-rates. Of course the CPU still limits some frames at the highest settings but nowhere near as many as in low-res modes. We've already seen benchmark results (albeit from NV themselves) that show the potential of SLi, to say that it's 'useless' shows your true colours for everyone to see.

I can't wait to see you start flaming SLi owners when they're up and running! :)

Sounds pretty cool to me. Don't forget to give us some more info.......when you can. :)
