I just bought a new MoBo. Bought the ECS KN3 EXTREME...590 SLI...this thing is loaded for only 137. Bought a new AM2 4000+ running at 2.6 GHZ. I bought a single core because I need the security of a gaming rig that has no issues no matter what game I throw on it. Anyway this is a big upgrade from my KK266+ board runnin an Athlon 1700XP.

I plan on getting a BFG or EVGA 8800 GTS...either 320 or 640...not sure yet but I know it is an 8800.

Okay so on to ram...my question is this...if the MoBo ram voltage is default at 1.8v...which the manual says it is, do I have to buy Ram that is rated at 1.8V. I have seen Ram on the EGG that suggest or state that they run at higher voltages like 1.9-2.0 all the way up to 2.4v. I want to buy OCZ or XMS 800DDR2. Most of them run at 2.0 or higher.

Should I stay with what the mother board defaults too and if I go with a higher voltage do I need to them manually go into the bios and set the ram timing and voltage??? If you know of any good articles...please link. I read the FAQ but it doesn't adress this issue.

Remember the last time built a system...Ram voltage was still set with Jumpers.
 
at stock speed it's fine to run it at the mobo's auto voltage, but if you're OCing then push the voltage to what the RAM is rated at.
 
leave the BIOS alone and just boot at 1.8v, install windows XP and then install Nvidia Ntune. Is it best to use this program to crank the voltage up to the desired value???

Is that the best way??? In the manual it said that raising the VDIMM voltage could cause CPU damage.

If I up the VDIMM voltage does that automatically up the CPU voltage. VCORE I think it is called.

I want to overclock!!! So I was expecting to OC the CPU. For example, dropping DDR2-800 to 533 MHz data rate will allow a CPU overclock of 50% to bring the memory back up to its rated speed. So it seems to me that I should leave the voltage at 1.8v standard and possibly start to OC from there since the memory has already been approved by the vendor to be OC'able. Based on their 2.1v rating on the Ram.

So to me it would seem that I should leave the ram alone and the voltage at 1.8 and start to OC the CPU from their and see what I get for a RAM speed as I OC.

Is this the correct procedure???
