Ok first off my computer is a Dell. It was purchased on a very tight budget a little over a year ago. It is a 4600. Came with a 2.66P4(not sure of the mobo offhand), 512 pc2700(even though I ordered the one with 3200 but they screwed me over), a fx5200 and thats it. The rest I left out because I had parts I could swap in.

Since then I purchased a 9800 pro. So far I am guessing my best bet would be to grab another 512mb of memory. One other option, I am not sure if it would help performance, is buying a better cd-drive. I am just using my 40x burner right now as my main drive, I took the other out and gave it to a friend. Does a 40x cd-rom slow down gaming at all? I wouldn't think so but I am not sure about that one.

Anyways if anyone has some recommendations on what would give the best performance increase in gaming *HL2 cough* lemme know. I can run it in 1024x768 with everyone maxed out and 6xAA and endure the drops into the 20fps range.
 
i think your best bet would be to get another 512 stick and a new motherboard, so you can OC that processor of yours, as it is probably showing its age in HL2 especially.
 
Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if you could help on the mobo part but I was wondering how I could obtain my CPU Socket Type, System Chipset, or Form Factor. In other words.... the New Egg Mobo search options I know about two thirds of.

What is the difference between a PCI E 16x and a 1x? I'm guessing 16x is for a video card and 1x is for something more mundane.
 
I agree, you should put more RAM in there.
If you are going to upgrade your mobo, hopefully you don't have a propritary shaped board in there.
 
If you're getting RAM i'd get some PC3200 for the future...it might be better investment than some more PC2700 (this is assuming you're going to upgrade the processor/mobo sometime soon...)
 
Well yes 3200 makes sense but I really did not think you could mix different memory speeds. With AMD it reverts to the lower of the two speeds but how does it work with Intel? Also instead of upgrading the mobo I am considering just bearing with what I have since the Dell tower I have isn't normal size and won't fit most things. I might as well just wait and eventually build a new computer because right now I am still doing great with games.
 
yeah - you can mix different memory speeds.. the memory will work at the speed of the slower module unless the slower module is capable of running at faster speeds..
