i would like to get a new video card as some games are starting to lag and stutter and i have to lower the graphics settings. nvidia or ati doesnt really matter to me. what would be the best upgrade vs.cost right now from a 9700pro to see a noticable difference in performance? ~$300 is a good range but i have a decent job so i can spend extra IF its worth it :D discuss!

The 6800GT is the sweet spot...but it's $400...worth it though...otherwise I would get the 6800NU which is awesome too...

There have already been a shit ton of threads exactly like this btw...you probably won't get but a few responses cuz this discussion has been done too many times already...have a look around...

any 6800 GT, the x800pro has been shown to be limited because of its 12 pipelines
both of those are around 400 dollars, dont pay more for them as some sites have been raising prices to take advantage of the shortage (especially the BFGtech version)
getting a 6800 ultra is somewhat uneccesary as the preformance diff. between that and the GT is very small (less than 5% in most instances)
the x800xt-PE has been shown to be beaten even by the GT in several games to it would be almost futile to spend 500 bucks when a 400 buck card beats it.
my thoughts

$300 will get you into a 6800nu (in stock @eVGA) which outperforms the 9800xt/5950Ultra in some benchmarks.. As mentioned above the 6800GT is the best bang for the buck right now.

6800gt\x800pro look at some benchmarks and pick what you prefer.

The 6800nu is not really worth the $300 as it is in my opinion not a big enough step from the 9700 to warrent the money.

you're in TX, you've got a Frys near you, no?

stop by sometime and see if they've got any BFG 6800GT OC cards to take it for a spin. if you don't like it, you can always return it, but i seriously doubt that you'll dislike the card.

I own a 9700Pro and I'm going to get a BFG 6800GT. I think that is the 9700 of this gen.

i will go see if they have it at the Fry's down the street. so in the nvidia line (from low to high end) there is the NU, GT, and ULTRA? is that right? does the GT overclock up to the ultra speeds?

the BFG 6800GT OC that i bought from Frys overclocks past ultra speeds. your results will vary as with any overclock. i have heard of some duds that can't do 400/1100, but most of them will do it without complaint.

there is an 8+ page 6800GT overclocking results thread here:

Either a 6800GT or an X800Pro will be a great increase from your 9700Pro. I bought the GT simply because it was there and the price was right ($300 from BB :D ) but at this point I'd say but what you can find beacuse you'll be happy with either one.

9700 Pro, I'd probably just keep it for a few more months. Right now all of the cards are selling at MSRP or $50+ higher, etc. If you wait 2-3 months I bet the prices will come down quite a bit.

Well, except for the 6800 vanilla since the demand is not as high I've seen it for as low as $280's (MSRP $299 - I think.)

The 9700 Pro is a great card already, BUT if you must buy now.... I'd definitely get a 6800GT. SM3.0 + tons of driver improvement headroom.

I have the money to buy a 6800GT right now, and I am running on a 9700Pro. I could easily wait for a few more months before buying the 6800GT, but its DOOM 3... and I have to play it at maxxed out settings man... first time playing Doom 3, I have to see it in its full glory.

There's no fun in playing a game the second time around even with better graphics... well thats just my opinion, but I want the first round to be a blast and half.
