So I've decided to build my own computer, get all the pieces and install them. I turn on the switch and everything whirs up(didnt plug in my monitor yet becuase I was at my grandpa's! So I'm pretty satisfied with my work. I took it home and try to plug in my monitor but i realize theres not the right plug for it! Here's my motherboard. The connector on my mobo looks like this . And the end of what my monitor cable looks like this but it's male not female.

These all fit so that they physically hook my monitor to my mother board but it doesnt work. So now what do I do to fix this?
Any help would be greatly apprieciated.
 
You don't have onboard video on that motherboard. You can't hook it up to a monitor without a discreet graphics card that plugs into either the agp or a pci slot. If you aren't into gaming you can get a pretty cheap graphics card, it looks like you bought your parts from newegg, just go back there and look for a cheap agp graphics card. I would reccomend a geforce4 mx4000.
 
I did buy a graphics card (geforce 6800). But when i plug it into the motherboard and a turn it on, it just gives me a continous beep.

does the 6800 have a seperate molex power connector plugged into it?
 
Now wait. You bought a graphics card but when you install it you just get a beep. But you were trying to plug the monitor into a port on the motherboard? I'm a bit confused.

Make sure that you seated the graphics card in the agp slot and closed the retention clip at the back end of the slot. Make sure that you have a molex connector plugged into the video card that is running off of a line that doesn't have a lot of other connectors in use. What power supply are you using? It could be you just aren't getting enough power. Also just as a precaution find out how to reset your motherboards cmos from the manual and do that. If neither of those work give me a bit more information and I will see if I can help you out.

There is a black and red wire coming from the fan and its plug into the card itself.
 
Does anyone else think that he is trying to plug his monitor into the com port?


For further help, I know I will need the following:

Monitor make and model
Card make and model (you already gave the model, but who made it?)

Oh and as for the connection on the card Antirush was refering too......Does it have that other one?

is there a wire from the powersluppy going to the videocard?
you NEED a power connector on the videocard.
 
Ohhhh man am I ever stupid! I just plugged it in and now it works!! Yay I'm so happy, thank you everyone! :D

You shouldn't be.

This is an example of someone who SHOULDN'T be building their own computer.

That being considered, your confusion should clear up.

You gotta start somewhere...and if the last pc they built was 2 or three years ago...they might not know that newer video cards require extra power.

Exactly, the last card I bought was an ati radeon 9200 which didnt need to be plugged in.
 
I can understand if you're not up to speed on newer video cards, so you didn't notice you had to plug it in, but when I read this thread, it gave me a good laugh :D

Good thing it was just a missing cord and not a hardware problem.

Well, glad you figured it out. At least you didn't break anything and it all works now. And yes, my confusion has been cleared up ;)
