What to do with a Chieftec ?

So i was cleaning out the store yesterday and came across my old silver Chieftec :D

I was like YeaY....cos i switched from that Chieftec to a Wavemaster cos i had to bring my rig overseas...and now that im back for good, i need a bigger case...Was originally planning on getting the CM Stacker 830...But since i found this :D I just basically wanted a big ass case without all the bell's and whistles...Over here, im short of choice and the Stacker was as close as i could get..

However, I have the cash to get the Stacker...so i thought before I splurge on it, I thought i might do something to my Chieftec...So just wondering if anyone here has a similar casing who has done anything to it ? Its completely stock right now...and completely empty...

Ill post pics of it later...Basically i wanna try and make it as functional as possible...and if i screw up...i can just go meh...and get teh Stacker :D

The only aesthetic change i might to do it, is to add a windowed side panel and some lighting...tahts it...I wanna make it as air cool as possible..so suggestions for where to make 120mm, 80mm etc holes and plonk in fans ins appreciated...
 
on mine i have dual 92mm nexus fans in the rear slots... cant go bigger than that w/o building a new frame for them. You might be able to slice open the front enough to get a 120 in there but i stuck with dual 80mm nexus fans. One on the side panel and still working on a blow hole port up top.

I will probably start hacking this case up (want to make it short and fat with an angled optical drive mounting position) and repaint it glossy with the LCD portion of the Lian Li fan controller in the front door.

Problem is cheiftechs have been done to death... tough to come up with something original.
 
well..to be honest..im a little past that place where its gotta be a kick ass looking casing... :p

So im just looking for suggestions for where to cut what sized holes for what fans to increase airflow performance...

I might do something fancy with the side panel tho...dunno what yet..

The biggest thing i wanna know is about polishing and cleaning up this casing...its got a fair amount of scratches on it...so was wondering about methods to getting to a completely new shine again...with as much of the scratches gone...

Perhaps a mirror finish ?
 
well you could chop the front metal out quite a bit... you have to pull the top harddrive rack out to get to the clips for the front bezel, but you'll see it. The side panel on mine i just used a step bit and drilled out a pattern that the 80mm fan sits under... after going to a 120mm thermaltake heatpipe setup the poor 80mm isnt doing anything since the 120 pulls the air through it. One of my projects for my cheiftech will be to get it to cool better using lots more mesh and better fan placment. right now with an XP2400 it runs at 93ºF and 111ºF cpu temp. ideally i should be able to get those down another 5 degrees w/o much work.

Theres been some good threads about doing a mirror finish with duplicolor rattle cans and some serious sanding. I think it would be fun to try.
 
Nuts...the mirror finish mod guidelines in the Case-Mod FAQ are now 404 pages :(
 
My chief has a 120 in the lower front. I pulled the bottom HD cage and support, made a new sideways cage that sits on the bottom behind the 120. Have a pair of 120s in the side panel (also filtered). 120 blowhole up top. Couldn't fit a 120 in the back, so sadly the 80s are still there. I never even thought about 92s so that might happen in the near future (thanks Boostdemon)
Also, the front "grill" is sectioned for easy access to the front filter.
I bought a new bezel which might make it into a worklog if i stop long enough to snap a few pics.

thanks for the suggestions...prolly go with a 120 in the lower front, side panel and on top...and see about the 2 92' on the rear :)
