Ok here is my rig before anything. I have an Athlon 2400+ on an ASUS( Not sure of the model number, but it is the AMD 760 Chipset), 512Megs of PC2100, ATI Radeon 9600PRO at 435Mhz/ 345Mhz, 120 GIG Segate w/8MB!

Now with that said! I want a great gaming system. I need a new case, MB/CPU, RAM and video card. I am a hardcore AMD enthusiast, and was just waiting till the .09nm came out. So if you could help me out with some suggestions I would really appreciate it!
 
sell what you have and put that money and the 900 towards a s939 amd system. if you can, sell it all now and wait for nforce4 boards to come out.
 
piss it away on a 6800 UE on ebay ;)

with 900, id go for a gig of mem, s939 3200+ (winchester), the MSI 939 nf3 board, and a GT.

Failing that, grab an nForce4 SLi-capable mobo, A64 90nm, 6800GT, a gig of DDR....

I'd save some cash on the card and just go 6800nu and softmod/oc it

screw the OCZ, get a gig of PDP memory from newegg. has good timings (2-3-2-5, i believe) and oc's like mad from what ive heard. that should save you that 100 dollars you went over

Agreed. That ram isn't worth 272 IMO.
 
i kno!! buy a used intel extreme edition @ 3.4ghz or watever is higher and put it on your keychain!! wootwoot ;)

$900 is not going to upgrade everything. I would suggest on starting with a nice socket 939 mobo and a new processor, since these are the core components of a good computer. Then save up for a gig of good ram and Gpu. You might be able to spend only $500 on the cpu/mobo combo and get a $400 vid card too. Ask yourself this how long do I want this computer to last before I have to upgrade again. You dont want to skimp on the processor is my advice.

you are wrong. what i suggested was right at 900. he adds anohter 50 bucks, and can get case of his choice.

let me be more specific. 3200+, MSI K8N Neo2 Plat, 1gb PDP pc3200, 6800 GT. with prices already posted by other users, it chimes in right at 900 bucks.

512 memory now 512 later when you got more money
keep your case you got now for a little while and save up

Take the mans advice and get a good processor/mobo now and the rest later. I made the mistake of getting an old 845 P4 (don't ask why) when they came out and very soon there after saw the error of my ways.

If you do not care if it says Dell or some other manufacturer on the CD you can get an OEM version a hell of a lot cheaper than the 190+ they are selling the retail XP Pro for.

dell XP cd's will not install on retail boards. they have a bios check. you cannot get windows for free legally, but he should just be able to transfer is hold license onto his newmachine, just called microsoft and tell them you changed the mobo and reinstalled windows. works like a charm

oh, and retail price for windows XP professional is 299. upgrade is 199. OEM from newegg is 140ish. retail for XP home is 199, upgrade 149(i think)and OEM on newegg is 94 bucks. this is the RETAIL OEM not Dell OEM

if he gets a good board with a good chipset, ie, the board weve all been suggesting, and a winchester core a64, he should be able to oc to 2.5-2.6ghz pretty easily on air. thats just about the ebst damn deal you can get

if he gets a good board with a good chipset, ie, the board weve all been suggesting, and a winchester core a64, he should be able to oc to 2.5-2.6ghz pretty easily on air. thats just about the ebst damn deal you can get

you won't do it, but I got this for $600:
refurb Dell 8400 (P4 3GHz, 160GB SATA, CD-RW, WinXP, etc)
upgraded memory to 1GB
6600GT (coming in a week or so)

the reason i was jumping on that is because socketA was allocating 5-600 for just the board and proc, wihch would mean like 3500+, which he doesnt need to get good performance, he can stay at his 900 dollars and get everything he needs

in my expiernce, any OS distributed by an OEM will not work on retail parts, but hey, they couldve changed, i jsut doubt it.. its a way to cut down on piracy, and microsoft gives the OS to them cheaper if they do some kind of protection like this
 
Assuming you can salvage your hard drive and cd-dvd I just bought an IDEQ SFF (mini computer). You could get something like the following

IDEQ 210v ~150
AMD 3200 XP ~120
1 GIG RAM ~160
6800 GT ~400
Total: 830

The 200w ps will drive the 6800 GT even oced but if you like you can get the 250w ps for about $40

You can also get a 64 bit chip and box for them now as well but itll cost you probably another 150-200.

These little IDEQs look great and have gotten great reviews. Good for Lan partys and it would be easy to find use for something that small when you are all done with it.
