I have been thinking about something, but can't seem to make a decision.

I need the teams help on making sure this is a good move.

I am wanting to make some changes to my main boxen, but not sure if it is a good idea.

Currently: Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz - Abit IP-35 Pro - 2 x HIS 4850's

I am thinking about going to: AMD 9350E - MSI K9A2 Platinum


I already have one AMD 9350E - MSI K9A2 Platinum combo with 4 x HIS 4850s in my new GPU boxen and been very happy with the performance.
4 GPU + Quad Core = 395 watts at the wall ---- damn impressive :)

(I will take some pics in the morning and show it off)

My Abit only has 2 x PCI-E slots & running SMP on the other two cores.
(My current PCI-E slots are 16x - 4x and that 4x drops my ATI PPD by 300)

If I was to go with the *upgrade*, I would gain around 4000 PPD by adding one more video card and dropping the SMP client with the option to add another card later down the road in the 4th slot.

Money wise, I could probley sell the mobo and CPU/TRUE and break even with the new items.

Does this sound like a good move?

 
You giving up CPU power, for potential GPU power.

If the new proc is fast enough for you.... go for it.

I'm not giving up my Q6600 in my main rig because I loves teh powar!

 
id just go with a really low end amd processor w/ a 790FX board.. you can get 4x 16x slots or 2x 16x 2x 8x slots.. then when the 45nm phenom FX cores come out.. switch over to that.. then you can save the low end core for something else later on down the road.. or build an htpc w/ it.. you really dont need that much cpu power to run gpu clients..
 
I know you are a diehard AMD/ATI fan but for your first box, you can replace the ATI cards by 2x 9800GX2 then you will have eggs spread across a few baskets instead of putting everything in a single basket (and be hit hard if ATI servers choke on a pretzel).

ATI only ... I am only using AMD CPU's because the motherboards have the 4x PCI-E slots.
I would much rather go intel ... but these 9350e quad cores are such low power ...

X, you are right about not having all my GPU in one basket, but I already have 2 x 4850 in this system now, just going to add one more. Once I build my house next year and have a server room, i plan to get a few nVidia GPUs to even my farm out.

Well, I got the system ordered. I will swap it out next week and try to sell the hardware I have now.

I know the Q6600 (VID 1.2625), TRUE, and ABIT IP-35 Pro will go pretty fast.
Theses always seem to be in demand

 
The nVidia client has just had new work-unit released for it which are dropping the PpD on my GX2's by ~32%, 5,850 PpD -> 4,000 PpD.

I would upgrade to a K9A2 as then take stock of the options for further upgrades.
Thats what I may do.
Drop my Q6600's and get a couple of K9A2's and 45 watt Brisbanes to power my GTX's.
And them maybe build a quad x2 card box.
