i'm frusterated with my onboard audio, i'm getting high frequency noise that seems to be synced with my mouse movement and hard drive activity when i use my headphones. i'd like to take the plunge and buy a new sound card (i'm assuming this will help and give me better quality sound to boot) i'm looking at spending about $50-$75... i'd kinda like the audigy 2 value it's right in my price range, but i'm also looking at an external sound card by creative so i can switch back and forth between my desktop and laptop (while at home and at work) any suggestions? would this be the best solution?

(BTW, i'm using Logitech Z-640 speakers and Sennheiser HD280pro headphones, on nforce4 integrated sound)

stop stop stop. try this first. I had the same exact symptoms, scratchiness and whining that went hand in hand with the mouse.

Turn on a song.

Open up the volume properties (the speaker in the system tray) and mute things until you can't hear the song any more. Leave all the ones unmuted that stop playback.

helped me tremendously.

there never was a cd audio cable installed on this computer, and the noise is still there even with everything in volume control muted.
