I starting to look for a new mobo and CPU and a video card I've had great luck in the past with AMD and was thinking about going that way again. I know everone is going to tell me that the Opteron 165 is the way to go....but is the Dual core that much better. I running a 2500 XP( Clock-locked) 512 MB DDR3200 and an Aopen board so I'm getting behind the times and anything will be an improvement. What I'm going to be doing breaks down like:
50% surffing
40% gaming ( NWN, BF2, SWBF, Quake 4)
10% ripping movies
What do you guys think?

definately go with the dual core 165 if you can afford it and a good overclocking mobo, PSU, and memory

from a benchmarkers perspective, i had an Opty 150 single core, then got a 165, it made a huge difference in some things, and only a little in others, but i can tell you my Opty 165 at 2.7Ghz is faster in everything, even things that aren't coded for dual core than my Opty 150 was at 2.8Ghz, i think it's because the second core is always there to catch any other processes that pop up needing a few seconds of CPU cycles and the first core can continue as it was without having to be interrupted.......

the games you mentioned, at least some of them are coded for dual cores, BF2, COD2, Quake4, there's a growing list, many titles people are not aware of, i believe its up to a good 15 games or so, and always getting bigger

and if you like to surf, use media player, and rip DVD's, you can do all at the same time and see virtually no slowdowns, video encoding used to make Firefox slowdown for me on the single core, not anymore....

its just better all around than single core

Hummm... Let take a 3200 Venice going for $200 CDN and the 165 opty going for $393 CDN thats $193 in the diff. I just can't see the Opty being that much faster when doing one thing at a time. Wouldn't I be better off putting that money into a better video card. Say I was going to buy $200 card but went with a $400 and the cheaper CPU? Maybe I'm wrong (it's happen before) so please show me the light or show me a link of the benchmarks.

If you do one thing at a time, and can't justify spending extra cash for that extra speed in multi-threaded apps, then don't get a 165. I'd say go dual core, but I'm not using your computer :).
