What speakers should I get?

Im looking to get new audio for my PC and consoles, I don't know if I should go with regular PC speakers or a home theater system. The speakers would be connected to my PC, which is what I listen to all of my music on and game with, and my PS2 and Gamecube. They need to be roughly $300 or lower, a little higher is OK but not too much. Please help me decide what I should get.

Another user, Bop, was in a similar position. You might want to give this thread a read for starters.

Is near field listening important, or will these be used further away? That's something that must be kept in mind. Also, if you want an el'cheapo receiver, they start around 100$us, so that only leaves you with about 200$.... see how quickly a 300$ budget goes with a Hi-Fi setup?

Well, I hope this gives you a good starting point.

Depending on how many speakers I'll get, there will be some right in front of me and some on the wall behind me about 6-7 feet back.
